Defense Grid The Awakening Demo review

Posted by Greatdictator On January - 17 - 2009

Something really quick …and the written review here isnt the text but things i missed out and or might have not mentioned

Defense Grid Demo written review

Now the best way you can describe Defense Grid is a Sci Fi version of the Warcraft 3 map Tower Defense and quite personally i prefer this one for a couple of reason first off the graphics are well polished , art style is great in level design and enemys …now the enemys there ae several of them in the demo and alot more in the full version but the most interestign is the one who can teleport an enemy infront of him…but DAMN those boss enemys are quite though.

The main goal of the defense game is to prevent the enemy from obtaining the power cores and if i heard right you lose power in a sector the more you lose of them…an additional danger to this is the fact that once the enemys that are killed while carrying them the cores dont respawn but slowly drift back and they can be recaptured by the enemys if they get too close.

Now all towers dont work the same so range and attacks might differ so you also have to think about where your going to place them as well for example the flamethrower tower has low attack but can attack multiple enemys at once and has a low range so you have to put it somewhere where enemys pile up and where he can hit the most of them , or the laser tower which burns enemys after it stoped shooting the enemys will continue to take burn damage until they cool off.

As stated in the review the gameplay is implemented with the level design but i aint sure if theres a pause button but if there isnt then that adds to sort of a need for quick thinking especially when you see the aliens comeing closer on the radar…i still find the radar to be a very nice thougch so you know which kind of enemys are comeing.

Now on a last note i know that this review is short but…hey i didnt play that much alright.
The game supports achivments as well and the games interface as well as its camera as yuve seen there is no mouse cursor…which made me instantly think if the developers would have ported this onto the Xbox Live Market place since like is said the games interface definetly would be up to the job of playing this game with a joystick and it isnt as fastpaced as other console RTS games so the palyer has time to select tha twhich he wants and build it up.

All in all i hardly found any complaints except that the demo was short…so i would urge you all to go out and try the game hopefully you guys will like it .

Have fun.

Evil Genius review and …game design ?

Posted by Greatdictator On January - 12 - 2009

Yes you read it right, I finally have another review up and i found something that some of you guys might be interested in…but first a review :D….of 2009 DUN DUN DUN!!!!

btw i was sick on the day i recorded my voice

basics of what i was talking about
EG review

Focus on style and base design

Almost like Dungeon keeper

Funny AOI missions like stealing the Eifel Tower by shrinking it , planting a fake diplomat
in one of the 5 factions and stealing mr Sunggules

Loot is usefull for more then just decorateing like researching new items

You get a funny radio broadcast even if youll mostly hear the same one

would have been better with cinematics for some AOI

Traps combos encourage base design and trap laying by rewarding combos with money

Minios are easy to know what they do and research is fun and simple

AI is good but it will do some really stupid things at times

Agents and tourists

Building hotels to occupy tourists

Stats and minion care

Lots of funny interrogations and funny objects like brain washing machine

Certian traps are funny as well

game is frustrateing and fun at the same time mostly due to how long it takes
for you to gather money

lots of looney and creative henchmen…and wierd too

Super agents are annoying but satisfeing when you finally defeat them

Evil geniuses have some diffrneces but more locations or special islands for each would
have been better

only 3 same superweapons for each

Game is fun

The game design video:

hope you enjoy

Fallout 3 review

Posted by Greatdictator On November - 28 - 2008

Well everything is FINE and dandy in vault 101 the game starts …with what has to be the youngest starting age so far in any RPG it starts you off at BIRTH so thats quite suprise the first time you play through it .Then you have quite a nifty selection of beards, hair styles and lots of other things I didn’t capture them all,but am sure that everyone thats watching this now probably already saw this somewhere else , but anyways the game is huge has a good story and above all has good gameplay so lets start with the story.

Basically put without spoiling the story you were literally born and raised in vault 101 starting from your birth till you 10 years old through the infamous GOAT test till the day that your father escapes the vault …and ill say it right now the game has 4 ending …not 400 .While your in the vault the game cleverly introduces the you to the games basic mehanics such as use of the VATS system and you create your characters look as soon as your born .You will also have a birthday party when your 10 .

Well once you exited the vault you get your first glance at the Capital wasteland where many dangers await…but first lets go to Megaton the first town that you’ll probably either save or destroy
depending on which path of karma you’ll choose ,the game has one of the best and is among the best of games that have a very good morale system, for those of you who have played Oblivion the games talk system might seem familiar except for the different look but still its nice…although I wish that they would have give your character a voice though ,since its kinda hard to imagine what tone of voice and all your character is using while you talk .But anyways if you have a high enough speech skill or a perk sometimes it opens unique dialog options.

No matter what you heard Fallout 3 is not a shooter it has a FPS perspective but you can go to a 3rd person perspective but its only recommended if you wanna check out your characters gear , the game offers a lot of exploring and a lot of stuff to collect such as bobble heads ,find secret areas such as the Bethased studios building , schematics for self built weapons and perhaps and an old favorite for the fans …Hermin…or was it Herbert …well anyways its an old character from the previous games hes a Ghoul that grew a tree out of his head and now it grew big enough to have a nice little sanctuary of green in that barren brown wasteland .

The games world moves in real time so its always different in one place of the world you might encounter an encounter between super mutants and some Talon company mercenary’s or your in danger and are being attacked and you run into a caravan on their way to the next town and they save your life …no matter where you are theres always a chance of something else happening on the other side of the area or in the middle of D.C . The game has a HUGE list of places you can visit sometimes you will wonder maybe they should have put a bit less environments since most of them have multiple places to explore within them you will always wonder whats there and whats there especially if your like me and search every little square of these places for First aid kits if your like me to cheap to pay for new stimpaks .

You can even break into houses too see if anythings available there, such as guns or books…now books are one way to increase your skills during your play time ,the game also has a rather fun way of both hacking terminals and lock picking.
Now onto the combat part of the gameplay well that and perks, perk enable you some special attributes or powers or add extra point to your stats …but you will grow fond of some more use full ones such as my favorite the mysterious stranger perk which if your lucky every time you use the VATS system you will have your guardian angel kick some ass .
The real time combat is somewhat more difficult and is mostly used when the player doesn’t have anymore action points to spend to use the VATS system…in the end you will find yourself using the system the most especially if you have the Bloody mess perk which for some strange reason no matter where you shoot your enemy’s they will fall apart completely most of the time but it’s still sweet to watch that cinematic camera zoom in on your face before you blow off your enemy’s head in glorious slow motion.

The music in this game…well I cant say anything more but the radio station music has some pretty sweet tunes and old classic’s such as I don’t want to set the world on fire and some more and if you like such songs then theres several more that am sure you’ll enjoy as well ,you will find lots of different other stations ,such as a Chinese army or liberation station or whatever , later on after you complete a quest one that has you retrive an violin from an old lady and my favorite Galaxy news radio which a pretty cool DJ which gives you updates on the things you have been doing and calling you whatever title your karma level has given you …although by the time he finally reports one of your latest deed’s you will most probably have done 2 or 3 others.

The graphics are up to todays standard’s and deliver a great atmosphere of atomic bombs hitting the 1950′s futuristic America …even though they could have made less debris in the streets its seriously annoying trying to find the right subway tunnel. And just for a side note this series was originally a 2D game .

If you have an house or an apartment you can spice them up with one of several themes such as wasteland explorer ,laboratory, vault, raider ,LOVE MACHINE …or something like that and my personal favorite the pre-war theme you’ll also get several different things like a book for your stats or stimpacks and food, your house or apartment will also be where you put your bobbleheads which add to your attributes or skills , oh and if you want to keep your beloved dogmeat safe you can put him in your house or apartments since sadly he cannot be revived. And just on a quick side note … I never really saw exactly why radiation is damageing never did much to me.

My only major annoyance is that unlike the previous 2 to 3 games this one doesn’t have animated endings which is sad since the games intro pretty much shows that it probably would have been sweet.

Overall if you liked or loved the previous 2 Fallout games then you shouldn’t be disappointed by this one even though I haven’t played the previous 2 am pretty much sure that this is a bigger ,richer and above all more bloodier game then the previous 2 , even if your a hardened explorer or recently got out of a vault yourself you’ll love the wastelands of DC .

Minerva:Metastasis review

Posted by Greatdictator On April - 29 - 2008

After two and a half years in the making Minerva:Metastasis is the 3 installment of the Minerva series although i must say i didn’t play the first 2 but ill check them
The Mod:
Well overall the mod could use some voice acting cause its always risky too read while you could potentially get under fire while reading ,the mod is overall very well executed with great effects, good mapping, and EXCELLENT underground environment a bit later in the game and even more impressive it gets after you blow up the underground facility…although i would prefer less screecher zombies near the end
The Problems:
TOO MANY SCREECHER ZOMBIES!!!Besides that there are NO regular zombies only screechers and zombies a nice little detail seeing it that there are only combines on the island and not too mention the islands also a head crab production facility
Any innovations ?:
Well no its just your typical Half life shooting although there is a part of the game in witch you have too be clever so too speak you would have too avoid combine soldiers some traps and figure out how too turn certain objects off all that without the use of ANY weapon witch makes it a bit difficult but is rather fun too think of what too do next
And i guess you can count in music as a innovation cause i don’t think i heard the music in the original Half Life 2 witch means its newly created and is well made
Ill give the game a 9.0 cause of the difficulty and puzzle solving
(on a side note some of Valves developer helped with the mod there names can be found in the credits of the mod)

Half Life 2 Wars V0.1 Review

Posted by Greatdictator On April - 28 - 2008

Sorry if i said V1.0 in the video (and sorry for you hardly hearing me >.o)
The Mod:
Well the mod is a definite credit too the players of HL 2 that wanted too fight battles but never quite wanted too get shot at this version has only 2 maps soo far but in the next there will be 2 additional ones as well as the aspects of basebuilding (that you will see an example of underneath) there looking for people fore voice acting, mappers and modellers for the base buildings and sooner or later Multiplayer will be added to the mix
The Problems:
Well so far i have had one problem overall JUST 2 MAPS ,but thats not what bothers me on the second map (a desert one)the game crashes on me but since i have only 512 MB RAM i ain’t blaming the mod and the Antlions seem a bit ….too unbalanced there are too many of them and they come at you way too quickly but these things should be fixed in the next version hopefully
Any innovations ?:
Well as demonstrated in my video you can see that you can fight on multiple levels of a house probably making the capturing of a house in the game far much more probably important and or harder ,when throwing a grenade due too the physics makes it that much more strategy and Dependant on luck and AI should improve with the next version and rebel soldiers without weapons can pick up stronger or any weapons and too add too realism they also reload
(DO’H i didn’t notice that i couldn’t be heard i thought i set the volume down enough >.<)
So for now the mod receives a 8.5 due too smoke of the problems i HAD
And heres the example for the next version:

You can get the mod here

Well the game is preety fun although i would have liked a bigger map cause a 1 on 1 i aint exactly the baest the game more or less realistic but its still fun capturing resurces isnt the main point it mostly depends on how much points you set at the begining but neverthe less the game is preety fast paced and FUN! Enjoy (oh and please note this was a somewhat organised battle)

Stronghold 2 – Coastal Assault Map

Posted by Frankoman On December - 12 - 2007

Hello all,
Frankoman here and taking a Crack at a new Stronghold 2 video!

Every since I bought Stronghold 2 (in late 2005, I believe), I had been addicted. Until Summer of 2007, Stronghold 2 was my only true Computer Game, and me, having beaten all 100 or so of my Console games, needed something to do. I had been playing so much, that I had started to learn the best ways to win. The campaigns eventually end and the Skirmish mode gets so tiring and easy. However, the game comes with a very unique and amazing tool: The Map Editor.

From about mid 2006, I had been working with the Editor. As my maps got better, I decided I would post them on a Professional site for Stronghold 2 custom made games. Experienced or not, all are welcome; and any masters may take you under your wing if you seem willing. To my luck, one of the most popular on there named Turtleman took me under his wing, and I learned many small hints and tricks from him. Now, today, I have been dubbed one of the Professionalists in the Map Making field, and have brought two people under my wing.

I had some requests to make a video of me making a map, but never really considered it until now. I needed an idea to make a new Stronghold 2 Video, and this idea came into mind. So, here you are; what was an hour and ten minutes is now six minutes, on speed double x 3. It all flows well, and the music is nice too :)

I hope you enjoy this video, look forward to playing this map soon! I will be making a video of me playing the map (Can’t decide if I want to make it Cinematic or not.. Maybe I’ll do both?), and when that video comes out, I will have it up for download on trusted sites.

NOTE:
This video doesn’t include my Small details and Extras that I put into the map, and doesn’t show the said hour of scripting or said two hours of Play Testing (Play Testing is when you play the map every few missions to make sure that there is no serious over balancing or major bugs, etc).
This is a quick map, however. a Truly good map from me would take about a month to perfect, but for a 5 hour map, I feel it is one of my funnest.

Enjoy!

Sincerely,
Frankoman

Switch to DirectX10? Calm down people.

Posted by alf2142 On September - 3 - 2007

Does Microsoft’s DirectX10 strategy have negative effect on the gaming community? I would say yes, they are bragging about this directX10 to their necks is sore.

There is no doubt that DirectX10 is very powerful and are an huge leap within graphics, but they put to much pressure on the gamer community. As the boss of Valve said recently: Microsoft have made a great mistake when they made DirectX10 only to vista and not to XP.

And in my opinion is that Microsoft stepped over the line when they started to put games from console to PC to vista only, that was a directX9 game (Halo 2).

Anyway I’ve heard rumors that EA have canceled their relationship with Microsoft Because of this.

Don’t stress, the “directX10″ games don’t require as much hardware Microsoft say yes, World in Conflict is working on my PC (which is 2 years old). I’m guessing I will buy a Vista PC in a year, but there is no crime in getting it. I just made this post to calm down people that feel an enormous stress.

But if you are going to update your computer, get DX10. It will soon become more stable and user friendly.

Today Saint Lucas pointed out that the Total War blog will have a community award thing you can see it there http://blogs.sega-europe.com/blogs/totalwar/entry/20070615

Saint Nicholas proposed to nominate me for “the Outstanding Achievement Award.”

“For a site or an individual who has made an unrivaled contribution to the Total War community.”

In all humility my (over) 400 Total War video seem to fit as “an unrivaled contribution to the Total War community.”

I must say I don’t even know if anyone at SEGA or Creative Assembly have a single Idea that I exist.

So now it’s time to ask yourself what you can do for me after I entertained you for a year? :)

Well just go to the previously posted link and tell SEGA and Creative Assembly by leaving a comment that they should nominate Attila! Tell them why they should And where to find me. Do that in great number this way they won’t be able to ignore us as in great part member of the Total War community (even if I’m currently on a break from it).

You can also tell them there if you a member of the total war community forum, http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/18110/t/Total-War-Community-Awards.html

Thanks for believing in my work and that’s a good way to prove it! :D

Now to those that don’t remember here is what I did:
Rome Total War Carthage 87 episodes
German Chronicle 76 episodes
Sicilian Chronicles 17 episodes
Polish Chronicles 33 episodes
Turkish Chronicles 45 episodes
Holy Roman Empire chronicles 17 episodes

And I skip the independant ones.

Globally my videos were saw 2 248 561 time. So thanks every one for the great success. :)

Here is a small video i did to encourage my youtube community to do the same :)

Video Game Ranking System

Posted by Attila On May - 31 - 2007

Last day armykid45 brought to my attention a thing I wanted to make an editorial about since 2005 but always ended up too lazy to make anything of it. So this morning I started answering him but turned out in an editorial. Here is the resulting of what I think about ranking systems in video games and the thinking behind what I mean by what I told him:

“Rank just show how much you play and not how good you are.”

More and more the video games use ranking system to get player addicted by rewarding with abstract ranking system. Those ranking system have different impact but the first goal of the developer is to create an addiction in a really Pavlovian manner, that’s a good thing if it works, since the player will enjoy the game for a long time due to the constant pressure of levelling up. But the impact is the endless human attitude to compare themselves base on statistic and that’s where it really doesn’t mean much from a practical stand point.

Myth The Fallen Lord Ranking
For example, back in the Myth the Fallen lord days (1997). I became the 225 best plays on 64000 players. I wasn’t that good but I was an Emperor and all proud of myself. Then I took a break of a couple of months. By the time I played again they had restarted ranks. So I was back to the dagger rank. Then I fought a 2vs2 battle, I was with a “Lord” and I was a “dagger” against 2 emperors (best rank before the 10 best players). I won and the two emperors lost many point for being beat up by a Dagger. (They told me I had cost them many ranking).

Rainbow Six Raven Shield
After 2 days of playing Rainbow Six Raven Shield. I was the 72 best players and I certainly wasn’t that good but the rank favoured my stats base on probably many lucky encounters.

World of Warcraft

Bobwolf was use to play WoW with a ranger and he many time killed player of higher rank just by skill.

Battlefield 2
Battlefield 2 rank system is base on point you have by playing. That mean that if you just starting playing your rank will be low, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to dominate the game either by pure luck or by experience from other game you played before.

America’s Army
America’s Army rank gives your “honour” rank base on point you make. I played is since it came out but rarely. So I was good but since I rarely played I had low honour. So high honour player could not believe they were defeated by a low rank player. So they were thinking I was cheating and I would not be surprise if some admin did scan my game to see if I was cheating. I created my account on the 30-OCT-03 when you start you have 10 honour. In 2005 I was 24 of honour. I then decided to play a lot during 1 week or 2 and didn’t played since, I’m now a 39 of honour. So I have gain more rank in 2 weeks then in 2 years just by playing more with the expediential effect of my skill.

Rainbow Six Vegas
Rainbow Six Vegas on Xbox has a rank system similar to battlefield and allow unlocking guns. On pc it’s not the case. So I’m able to use equipment most Xbox player don’t have yet. Since most of them think I play on Xbox, well they think I’m an “Elite” and insult me of over playing the game. I think every one here know that If I was over playing that game, you would be flood by videos of it.

Conclusion
Rank is really a subjective thing that really doesn’t reflect the true skill of a player. In my opinion the best skill a player can have is the capacity to enjoy what he play without having to be stimulated by any Pavlovian stuff the game developer comes out with. That is why I rarely ever play anything that has any rank stuff in it.

What do you think?

Introducing the Store (in the US, UK and CA)

Posted by Attila On May - 27 - 2007

Hello every one,

As you all know making all those videos as regularly as I did is a lot of work and energy, not to speak of learning. I really like to do it but it’s hard to keep going without any money. So personally. I had hoped to turn that into a self sustained job and so far I used soft way to make very little money. So I added a donation button as soon as I started this blog. So far I had no donation.

So now I think I found a new way to help you help me. I created an online Store where you will be able to buy video games, books, movie, hardware, in the USA and UK.

When you will buy for that store I will get a small part of the price as a reward to help you buy a video game or anything else. You then receive what you bought and at the same time encouraged me to continue and give me the money to improve the quality of the content.

So I would like you guys to take a look and tell me what you think, and more then all, tell me what you would add to the list of stuff you guys would like to buy to help me. :)

As for Medieval II Total War Kingdom Chronicles, as you all know I’m a big fan of Total War. I created over 400 video of that series and I think it’s really point less to create any more video of Total War. Just make a small search about Total war on youtube and you will see that it’s page and page of my videos. First of all having that many videos is unfair for any one else wanting to share videos on youtube with other like I did and having to make his way against my 400 videos isn’t easy. (Good luck). The second thing, some of my videos were not saw as many times as the number of people that have subscribe to me. That mean there is a lot of content that people didn’t learned from all that because my video compete against my own video. So what is the point of making new one when there is still unexplored gem that can’t be see because of the colossal scale of what I did?

Now I do know as a fact that many people would like more Chronicles especially of Kingdom. So since I have no money to buy it. Well here is a chance for the community to do something for itself. If people make enough donations to the cause, I will buy the expansion with the money from donations and also use to finance one chronicles. (By one I mean one series that will be democratically chosen.)

If you consider it 5$ (or more) isn’t much individually but collectively it does make a difference. Not to speak about all the knowledge it gives the viewer.

So I hope you will use those different way I give you to encourage this community to create greater content that will interest you more every time since all the money I will get will be reinvested into this community. :)

Saving Gamer from themself?

Finally CBC joined youtube. :)
Here is a small report they published on youtube about a solution for video game addict in China. I would really much like to know what you guys think about that video game solution.

I would also like to know, do you consider yourself an addict? ;)

(Since I’m on a video game break and survive it very well… I guess I’m not so much an addict, but still… i’m a fanatic. ;) )

World War I and Games: My thoughts.

Posted by Matt13333 On May - 9 - 2007

Why aren’t there any? In my opinion it would be a successful concept for tactical warfare games. Guiding you’re squad across the no mans land, piloting a tank or fighter, getting trench foot. It would be a breath or fresh air, far away from these WWII clones we see.

I also don’t think that WWI vets aren’t given the attention they deserved. I wonder how it must be for the men and women who fought on the battlefields and home fronts, to see that the sacrifices you made being completely overshadowed by another. (I also feel this way about Korean War veterans.)

Back to the point, a WWI game would give players new battlefields to fight on, I for one am sick and tired of fighting the same battles over and over again. I am especially tired of seeing Normandy and Stalingrad! I wanna see the Somme, or the Hundred Days Offensive!

I am sorry if I’m offending anyone, I’m tired of World War II. I wanna see more World War I. The closest thing I’ve seen of one is the 1914 mod for Hearts of Iron 2. Which is a WWII game, ironically!
