Men of War

Posted by Attila On February - 20 - 2009

This is a battle of Men of War multiplayer beta. In this video I’m in charge of the left flank and I must hold the flank.

What is important to note in this video, is how I deploy my infantry around to scout the enemies movement. It’s important to find the right positions where they can hide and at the same time keeping them in a position of mutual support in case enemies infantry find them.

In this battle, my side successfully pushed the enemies out of the center of the the map and we didn’t advanced further for the following reasons. The enemies spawn nearby in a line, so they could have fired at the weak sides of our tanks. The flank being weak combine with the close range would also have made their armor piercing round stronger, exposing our forces to a certain death. Spawn camping your enemies isn’t very fun for them and for yourself so it was better holding the center.

For the most part, I was able to hold the line with a Sherman M4A2 against Panzer IV. The M4A2 has the advantage of having an heavier body armors then the M4A1. This mean that the your M4A2 can take much more punishment then the M4A1. You can get at closer range to the enemies and survive while shooting them back with stronger Amour Piercing power.

Of course the M4A2 while better then the M4A1, it didn’t resisted the powerful Nashorn anti tank gun and was destroyed later on. I avenged it by sneaking a crew member behind enemies line and trow dynamite that blew up the Nashorn. One thing you should notice is the limited view the enemies tanks have and that are represented by the red line with you click on the units. Also your prone infantry are harder to see for them. So if you use your infantry smartly you can easily destroy very important enemies vehicle with a low cost.

When I spawned a Pershing the fate of the enemies was seal considering the Pershing have a very heavy armor and a powerful cannon. The enemies medium tank were then destroy from a far without much chance to inflict any damage. So this was a clear victory.

***NOTE: The sound isn’t the best ever because windows changed an option without asking me, preventing me from having a “good quality” sound while recording. I tryed to reduce the inconvenient as much as possible and if it doesn’t do the job, i recommend cutting the sound to half. The game sound is much better then what you will hear in this video.

Men of War

This is an other video of Men of War Multiplayer Beta. Once again this is an infantry only battle. As you can see this battle happened at a different time of the day as the previous videos. The game randomizes the time of the day and the weather each time you play giving some welcome visual diversity in luminosity.

The action starts as my riflemans rush toward the central hill and if you look carefully you can see a horde of german soldiers rushing toward the same hill. Fortunately, my rifleman had the time to build up a first line of sandbags before the firefight begins.

This strategic sandbags line would become the center of the front. I was in charge of holding it, but most of the action actually happened on the flanks. You could expect the center to be the hot point of the battlefield, the reality isn’t so because of the difficulty to make frontal assault.

On the other hand, the main challenge of being in the center isn’t so much holding against enemies charges, but more the fact that you become a target from all side of the front. this is why sandbags are your best friends. Since your are under fire from all side it is clear that your soldiers will remain pinned down most of the time and they most likely will be targeted by, heavy machine gun, cannon, mortar, sniper fire, etc. Sandbags provide you hard cover against most of those weapons.

This mean that the best way to hold your line, is to go prone without trying to fire back. Doing so has multiple advantages, your enemies will waste ammo, your soldiers will be “safe” and they are available to get back behind those sandbags to push back any direct assault.

Later on in the game I finally got mortar support and it really did push back the enemies away from the central position. The hill also provided a safe cover to the mortar making it impossible to destroy by cannons or sniper fire and the mortar indirect fire make it the ultimate infantry combat weapon. But while the central front was more or less static and that this game started as a 8 vs 8 players.

The game when on and we lost 4 players for diverse reason and it soon became a 4 vs 8. Which is what made this battle even harder. While we did manage to take advantage of the relief early on, the lack of players in our team leaded to hard fights on the flanks. The left flank got overrun by the enemies soon to be followed by the right flank. At that point I was still holding on to the center but out number by mortars and cannons combine with the expected charge, we were to be push back. In a vain effort my mortar fire in every direction killing many enemies but was soon to be destroyed by enemies mortar fire.

Finally forced out of the center the only remaining option for us was to try to reform a front line by trying to push back the left flank that was held by a cannon. I send a squad of SMG and managed to kill most of the outpost soldiersof the outpost soldiers and the cannon but resulted with the sacrifice of my own squad. My squad was soon to be follow by a ranger / assault group that finished the remaining outpost soldiers. The enemies had reinforcements nearby and using the truck to kill a few rangers combined with heavy fire from all direction the rangers didn’t lasted long.

Finally out of time, resource and artillery of anykind, we tried to prevent encirclement but were forced to pull back due to the number of cannons aiming toward us and this is how we were defeated, outnumbered and outgunned but still alive, which was a victory in a way. =)

Men of War – Battle Zones

Posted by Attila On February - 12 - 2009

This Men of War video demonstrates the “Battle Zone” mod. It was probably one of the most evenly matched game of Men of War Multiplayer beta I had with adversaries of fairly equal styles. The video demonstrates how intense Battle Zones mode can be in a two vs two game with only infantry units.

The objective of this battle forced both sides to rush and hold the positions. You can see how grenades are key to push back the enemies and the necessity to use half of your soldiers to suppress the enemies, while a few well armed soldiers run toward the enemies trowing explosives.

In this kind of intense battle you need to anticipate the action. For example, ordering where your squads should throw grenades and where the your covering fire soldiers should suppress from to be effective.

The type of grenade also matter. For example against fortified infantry in building or behind sandbags, “Heavy Explosive Grenades” and dynamite are the key. While in open space fragmentation grenades may kill / wound more enemies.

This position where you put your heavy machine guns are also important and coordination with your ally is important.

For example, in this Men of War battle we deployed two heavy machine gun on high grounds. It was a good idea because it gave us the hill advantage. On the other hand we deployed them too close from each other providing too heavy fire for what was necessary. Deploying both of them on the enemies flanks would have allow us to defend them with much more ease and lower casualties and if well deployed we could have actually covered flanks and center at the same time. Always time to learn …

Men of War Tank Battle

Posted by Attila On February - 8 - 2009

This is a tank battle between US and German Panzers in the Men of War Multiplayer Beta. Me and Instinct choose to play without the fog of war so that you guys can enjoy a more colorful environment. It also decrease the risk of close encounter where the first shoot would kill the tanks.

When the video start I’m looking at two type of Sherman to see their stats and check if it was worth waiting for the points before spawning and get a heavier Sherman. If you look carefully you will notice, that all tanks have different armors defense and that to destroy them your cannon and Armors Piecing rounds need to have a greater power than the enemies armors. Also note carefully that in this game the crossair I have, in direct control, indicates with 3 colors, my chance of actually piercing the enemie armor. When it’s green there are high chances that the round will pierce the enemies shield. This means that you need to be careful about your tank positioning and face the enemies from the side with the best defense.

This video also demonstrate how all the environment is destructible and since i was the driver, i did not see any issue at rolling into the buildings… =P

I ultimately got my tank destroyed after its track was damaged and I could not evade the enemies fire.

Spawning a Pershing ultimately won the battle that was clearly in our favor and after seeing or testing the might of the Pershing tank, one of our adversary gave up. Shortly after the video end. So I hope you enjoyed that battle. =)

Men of War

This is an other video from Men of War Beta. In this video players didn’t had any rules and we were free to use all the tools at our disposal.

This was a 3 vs 3 battle. I was on the side of Japan this time against US forces.

The objective of the battle was to hold the river crossing for as long as possible to defeat the enemies. But as you will see in this video while the River Crossing was the target it was necessary to hold the flanks. I was in charge of the right flank. The main advantage at covering flanks is that you have a good angle to fire at the side of the tanks where the armor is tinnier then in the front. So you have more chance to destroy the enemies. I only did one mistake when I sent one of my tank to the left flank and got it destroy in a very bad way… what I should have done is to keep turning around the enemy tank instead of waiting to be blow up. But other then that mistake I think it was a very good game.

Men of War – The Sandbags Line of Death!

Posted by Attila On January - 27 - 2009

This is a video of Men of War Multiplayer beta. In this video my adversary and I choose to play the game in infantry only mode to demonstrate how great is this game at creating intense firefight. We were also playing without the Fog of War to keep the map colorful. We also decided not to use mortar or cannons.

The result of the those self impose rules is an intense and deadly firefight to take a strongly defended line of sand bag heavily defended by an heavy machine gun that kept my soldiers pinned down a long part of the game. The best solution was to countered it using well placed snipers that I directly controlled myself many time to take out the machine gunners. When the machine gun finally got out of ammo, I could finally advance toward the enemies and actually reach the sand bag line but each time my adversary did a brutal counter-attack, using grenade and flamethrower. In clear, it was epic.

Strategy Review of the Crusades and Jihad in Medieval II Total War

Posted by Attila On September - 11 - 2008

To start a Crusade you will need the right diplomatic context, because you have to get the blessing of the Pope. So maintaining good relation with him in the previous turns is crutial. One advantage of starting a Crusade or Jihad, over participating in one, is the ability to choose the targeted city.
The Jihad works similarly, but in the case of Muslim, it must be started by an imam following the loss of Muslim territories. Since Imam are under your command, it quite easy to start one compared to the
Christian factions and the diplomatic requirement they face. It’s important to note that to join a Crusade or a Jihad, you will need a general with an army of 8 units.

Crusades and Jihads have few advantages.
The armies participating move twice as fast then normally.
The units participating cost nothing to maintain and many units are only available as mercenaries in the crusade and jihad.
When a crusade or jihad achieves its objective, the generals participating will win a lot of traits and gain commanding experience.
For a Christian faction, the relations with the Pope will improve in the case of a victory.
The fact that your army moves around fast may allow you to loot many cities on the way making your empire richer.

While the crusades and jihad can look attractive, using them at the right moment is very important. You need to know how to gain from them, since they offer interesting opportunities.

Before joining a crusade or jihad, you need to consider the following aspects:

Make sure that the objective isn’t too far from the territories of your faction.
Conquering a city far away brings with it many problems.

A newly conquered city in the middle of hostile territory increases your military cost and divides your forces.

If your crusade doesn’t advance fast enough the desertion rate will increase and weaken your crusading army. If many factions are participating to the conquest of the objective, you need to remember that only one faction will control the city by the end of the crusade.

This means that at some point you can have a general and his army in the middle of an hostile territory without any place to retreat. The process of bringing him back can be dangerous making his army ineffective and costly. It can then be considered a waste of resources.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Red Dot Sight Review

Posted by Attila On July - 22 - 2008

Red Dot Sight

The Red Dot Sight is an add on that doesn’t have a long range zoom.

It’s main feature is it’s special reticule form by the red dot.

It allows the user to acquire a target with accuracy without being aligned directly with the eyes.

The main interest is to quickly increase the accuracy without limiting the arc of view.

This allows to acquire and fire on a target without losing sight of the environment.

The only cost being a reduction of movements when it’s used, making the player an easier target, especially in close combat.

Recoil has a major effect too, and forces you to compensate regularly to keep your target well aligned.

From a tactical point of view, we recommend to activate it exclusively when a target is aligned.

As soon as the target is down deactivate it to move back to your normal speed.

By using it this way you will gain from it’s quality without the inconvenience.

From a general stand point the Red Dot Sight is useful in all environments.

It is good in the open and close environments as long as you develop the right reflexes.

The Red Dot Sight appears to be the most versatile add on that you can choose in Call of Duty 4.

It is mostly adapted for a player with an aggressive way of playing, that like to move around and need to eliminate multiple target as fast as possible.

Medieval II Total War Multiplayer 1vs1

Posted by Attila On July - 4 - 2008

Here are two battle I did long time ago against worthy adversaries in Medieval II Total War Multiplayer. I have choose to show those battles because they are fairly “usual”. Their isn’t any amazing strategies. Both army are equal in numbers and no units are overpowered. In clear those battle from my point of view are the normal kind of battle where both side clash into a bloodbath and the issue of the battle is the result of micro choice and moves

In this first battle, i think the key of the victory was mostly the fact that I kept the enemies heavy cavalry busy, away from my stronger infantries. My Militia cavalry thanks to it’s mobility also did ambush the enemies slower cavalry and ultimately made it a none factor in the battle. I guess the high point of the battle remain the glorious ending of the enemy general that killed many of my troops before finally falling

This battle was against the Dane. it seem that it is a very under estimated faction but by experience the Huscarls are stronger then they seem. They can beat knights and heavy cavalry even if they have light chain mail armors. I think what is special in this battle is that as the byzantine I didn’t ordered my cavalry to charge and by experience the huscarls would have won if i did. Since the huscarls units attack faster then knights or byzantine heavy cavalry. So my keeping my cavalry in dense formation that neutralized the huscarl fast attack in a melee fight and forced them into a line infantry type battle where my heavy cavalry and some infantry could neutralize the huscarl, also the fact my i have deploy my elite infantry in the front of my army allowed my forces to make his infantry panic very fast.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare ACOG Review

Posted by Attila On June - 20 - 2008

The ACOG is a type of scope. This add on can be added to nearly all the weapons of Call of Duty 4. The main interest of the ACOG is to allow the player to aim at a target with precision at long range.

The ACOG has 3 negative impacts though.
It reduces the accuracy.
It limits the view of the player outside of the scope and reduce the movement speed when activated.

This means that it is important to activate the ACOG exclusively when the target is acquired and in the middle of your reticule. We recommend the ACOG uses especially at the hardcore difficulty since the enemies are weaker.

From a tactical point of view, we recommend the ACOG for players that adopt a defensive and careful approach. The ACOG leads the player to act as a supporting role and provide cover for his team, staying at a safe distance from the enemies. Moving crouched or prone to get a better stability provides an advantage to it’s user. Of course, if for a more offensive style, we recommend the use of the Red Dot Sight.

Finally, in general, the ACOG isn’t a very popular add on, since those that adopt a defensive stance tend to prefer a sniper rifle then an Assault Rifle with the ACOG.

The Québec international Air Show 2008

Posted by Attila On June - 18 - 2008

Well last week was a “busy” week in the real world here, we had the The Québec international Air Show 2008 and for 5 days we had fighter plane from the US, UK and Canada Flying over our head leading the city to become totally unproductive since every one has eyes toward the sky.

It’s very likely that in the coming weeks I will put some of the show from the 4 best squadron in the world for airshow like the US Navy Blue Angel with their F-18, The US Air Force Thunderbird with F-16, The Royal Air Force Red Arrows (UK) with their Hawk T1A and the Snowbirds with the CT-114 Tutors.

This is why you may have notice the two videos of F-16 and F-18 flighing arround with funy story linked to them.

Attila chasing the US NAVY Blue Angels: An Epic Story

After being cut off guard by the US Air Force Thunderbirds last week, Attila has fire half of his spy network and replaced it with a brand new half of courageous men and womens around the world!

Immediately he started receiving very accurate informations about a HUGE US Navy operation with the deployment of the Blue Angels around his hut. Confident of the informations he received, Attila rushed outside to improve his personal photo album and finally have a picture of the Blue Angels planes, since it seems impossible to get anywhere!

USAF Thunderbirds F-16 Have Spotted Attila?

This morning at 1100 Hours Romeo Time, Attila has been thrown out of his pailliasse by four F-16 from the US Air Force as they made the ground shook while flying at very low altitude and started circling around the Attila’s hut in a very disorganized way, but still threatening. After Contacting his wide network of spy around the world, Attila has determined that these planes are here for the biannual Québec international Air Show.

But later the same day during the afternoon, two F-18 from the US NAVY colored in blue and yellow (no footage available so far), in a very “Blue Angels” fashion, has also been spotted circling around Attila’s camp, surprisingly the large spy network remains puzzled by those two new suspect apparitions and unexplained. So the suspense remains did they spotted Attila or not?

Now while those video a nice, be assure that the best is yet to come and if you have any interest in planes you will be happy to hear that I have recorded over 2 hours of show and took around 180 picture of it. Now the challenge is to figure out how I will publish all that… Until then enjoy those two teasers! :D

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Juggernaut Perk Review

Posted by Attila On June - 8 - 2008

The perk juggernaut increases your health.

We recommend the use of this perk at the normal difficulty level. At this difficulty, it will allow you to survive a greater number of hits.

In the context of a frontal engagement, it will give you an advantage over your adversaries.

It is especially useful when the player adopts an aggressive style of playing and tends to run under heavy fire.

This perk is great for player that like to move in a very careless way and take risk running under enemy fire from cover to cover.

At the hardcore difficulty level we do not recommend it’s use. While it still offers you better health, the increase is too small to give you a real advantage against bullets that are much stronger.

This is why we recommend to dedicate this perk space to an other perk more useful for hardcore.

To conclude, the Perk juggernaut is very useful at the normal difficulty level for the offensive player that enjoy the risk taking, while at hardcore difficulty it won’t give you any significant advantage
and can be considered a waste of a perk space.

Mount & Blade Cavalry vs 300 infantries

Posted by Attila On June - 5 - 2008

This is a video I posted a few days ago and I must say that it’s popularity is impressive and the response kinda overwhelming. So I guess I will clarify a few things about it.

This was recorded in the version 0.951, without any mods. Now many people tend to think it’s a mod because of the look of shields and armors. But in fact those really cool looking equipment are the usual stuff, it’s just that because I was a vassal, I was allow to choose my colors making all my equipment and soldiers look good. Now I think my sword was a Nord Sword and it was really bad from my point of view. I wasn’t use to it and wasn’t too good with it.

As for my polearm, my use of it on a horse was contextual, it’s not a weapons very good for horse fighting and is actually much more effective on foot, this is why i use it. In this battle I was fighting against factions that started a war against me and my rebellion. Since I had conquer nearly all the faction I was rebelling against, the other faction were interested to conquer my conquest. This is how i ended up fighting huge armies and battle where I gained 50 renown per round. I ultimately pulled back since 900 enemies was a little too much for my 82 soldiers and fighting 300 infantries armed with spear and pike was a bad mix with my mainly cavalry oriented army.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Sleight of Hand Perk Review

Posted by Attila On June - 3 - 2008

The perk sleight of Hand increases the reloading speed of you weapon.

This insures that the player will be ready to engage the enemies with a full clip in no time.

In the case of shotguns, the sleight of hand does make a major difference, making the reloading speed instantenious.

So the limited quantity of ammo in the shoguns becomes less of an issue due to the gain in reloading speed.

The Support weapons also gain from the sleight of hand by reducing once again a long reloading time.

The sleight of Hand show it’s effectiveness for all weapons in all difficulties level. But shotguns and support weapons still gain a little bit more from it.

To conclude, while the avantages the sleight of hand provides, we think it’s better to adopt reloading strategies then choose this perk.

The only exeption being the use of the shotgun where the nature of the guns and contextual use of it gain a lot from having a faster reloading pace.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Stopping Power Review

Posted by Attila On May - 31 - 2008

The perk Stopping Power increases the damage inflicted to the adversaries by increasing the power of your bullets.

This perk is effective with all weapons.

It is especially effective with a sniper rifle, since without it, it may be hard to neutralize your enemies in one shot.

At the Hardcore mode, the perk Stopping Power isn’t as useful, since your enemies are neutralized in a couple shots.

You should not use this perk on Hardcore and it is recommended to choose a more adapted perk instead.

Finally, we recommend the Stopping Power perk at the normal difficulty, no matter the weapon you use.
While in hardcore we recommend to evade that perk at all costs.
