Starfox shadow of Lylat (freespace mod )

Posted by Greatdictator On July - 17 - 2009

Now here a quite interesting use for the Freespace engine….a starfox mod…yes although this one does seem to be more on the sim side then the original which was arcade. I am quite looking forward to it and….I do hope that they put in the do a barrel roll line in there cause it certainly wouldn’t be starfox without that in my opinion without further ado here the trailer for it an do note that i found this today :P

Greatdictator reviews : Overlord 2

Posted by Greatdictator On July - 6 - 2009

Welcome to the written portion of the Overlord 2 review for DYG hope you enjoy it .

A game like Overlord 2 is undoubtedly one of those game that isn’t exactly THE BEST but is rather close up there , by not only being fun but also adding its own style and charm ….and even yes it is sorta like pikmin….its in my eyes from what I know of and seen of pikmin .better.

Overlord 2 is an overall improvement over the original , the story starts out by Gnarl telling you that the minions have been scouring the lands for a new Overlord , since at the ending of raising hell one can see one of the mistresses pregnant , so you start out as a child in the small town of Nordberg there’s almost something Fable 2′ish to it.

Once you manage to escape the now new power in the land namely the Glorious empire that has put a ban on all things magic…and guess what you have magic in your veins , now I guess one can think of these guys as nazis of magic but whatever the reason once you escape them and get frozen your minions take you towards your new underground tower where they raise you up till your old enough to start bashing baby seals .
As mentioned in the video review the games story is still interesting just like the first one and the expansion .

Gameplay has been overall improved with not just making the minions even more fun to use , one of the main new features are the mounts the mounts are what they imply mountable animals , sadly the even though there are 3 mount types for various colors they aren’t used as much as you do the wolves so that’s a bit disappointing but its still fun when you do use them , this game is a lot more focused on minions and their ability’s sure most of the puzzles are still based on what color minion you have but this time their a bit more challenging and requier’s a bit more active role , some minions like the blues can now blink through enemy’s if you guide them through it or to clear away the magic radiation in the tower wastelands area .

2 Additional gameplay mechanic’s are the catapult sections and the ships sections , while they are both fun and enjoyable the game doesn’t implement the ship as much as I had initially hoped for hell they could have made a ship battle between the elf’s and the empire and you could have boarded an empire ship with a catapult and there you go you get the best of both worlds .

The spells have pretty much been revamped instead of having a fireball as your first magic spell you get a lighting attack initially this isn’t very usefull against enemy’s , but the alternative use for it is so much better you can now actually take control over slaves , people and citizens and turn them into….your slaves ( double loss for the slaves then he he ) , while in an area that isnt a town you’ve already conquer’d these slaves serve as cannon fodder to distract the enemy until you can kill them , while in a conquer’d town you have a hundred citizens that can be either turned into slaves or be killed since instead of being evil and somewhat evil you choose between being EVIL and REALLY evil ( in other words being dominant or being chaotic ).
The light RPG mehanics are present but expanded this time by having the ability to upgrade your minion’s hives , but the forging is a bit more streamlined this time around but lost a bit of a personal touch to it though .

As mentioned in the video review the game , the new enemy’s also pose a whole new level of challenge where I hardly died in the original I found it rather difficult to survive as many times in this one , since the formation ability gives the empire units almost ridiculous defensive boost until you kill their commander that is which adds a somewhat more tactical thought to the game .

One of the more fun aspects is still the ability to turn your tower or domain of evil more comfy , this time you have a lot more options by having 3 different mistresses ( one being a ghost …so that’s akward if you please her into bed ) whoever you choose to be first mistress you get her set of stuff of course you can change between mistresses to mix it up as much as you like .

The graphics and art design is even better then the original , with small animations touches in both minions and the animations…in all of this both video and this text I forgot to mention that the humor is still present , weather it be the fat …and almost scary fairy’s to the large emphasis on killing baby seals it still retains the same humor as the original although , some of the best lines are still delivers by Gnarl although there aren’t as many of them ( in my opinion ) as there were in the original .
For some reason the minion AI doesn’t seem as effect when it comes to bringing back stuff in the original after they break something they pick it up and put it on or bring it to you but in this one there were more then enough times where I had to send out another minion to pick it up , but the minion AI besides on that aspect is an improvement .

Overall this Overlord is an improvement over his predecessor ….and he didn’t lock himself in an eternal abyss , but like its predecessor it isn’t a perfect game but its still good….erh bad EVIL fun

Check in again when I review Paraworld .

Greatdictator reviews : Tropico

Posted by Greatdictator On April - 28 - 2009

Looking for a nice peaceful island with no tyranny and oppression? Well you’re on the wrong island because this is Tropico! Ruled by a GREAT Dictator, (pun fully intended) obey, or do you wish to get shot?
If you’re looking for another Sim City game this one isn’t it because in this one you can actually lose control of your island and citizens rebel. The games music and graphics are totally great. This is one of the few games out there that’s hard to find faults in.
Let’s hope Tropico 3 is just as good as the first 2. I can’t wait to have my dictator walk around the streets!

Greatdictator review : Red Alert 3 Uprising expansion

Its single player is its worst enemy except for the gameplay in the Yuriko missions , some new music is added to the soundtrack and is still great , Challenge is the high point of the game and the units even though overpowerd their still kickass and crazy . Overall not bad for a Single Player expansion but unless your a really devoted C&C fan you might want to wait till the price is down to 10 to 5 dollars.

Greatdictator reviews : Red Alert 3

Posted by Greatdictator On April - 10 - 2009

Today’s review features a guest who helped me co-produce this piece to the awesomeness that it is .

Red Alert 3 is one of the funnest game I’ve played, even though it came out somewhere close to the end of 2008. It is DEFINITELY the RTS of 2008. Why, you ask? because it’s fun.  The units are crazy and pure fun to play with. The cut scenes are just campy and fun to watch and the story isn’t far from loony either. It makes you want to kick ass in co-op mode or the single player. The awesome music returns as well with Frank Klepacki returning to make new music and remix old tunes into one of the best game soundtracks out, with remixes from both Hells March versions as well as a whole new one.

The AI will test you at times since it has received a VERY significant improvement in both single player and skirmish. Many RTS games don’t have any sort of naval warfare or if they do it’s an afterthought but not in Red Alert 3,  heck in this one you can build nearly your entire base on the water. The game also has a World Builder tool and has recently released SDK which will allow modders to make even better and crazier mods then found within C&C 3 .

Now on a final note to all those of you who manage to purchase the premiere edition before April 30th 2009 you can get a beta key for the next C&C game, now how awesome is that! If your reading this now you still have 20 days till then to pick it up.

So Commander, I will see you on the Battlefield!

Men of War Interview by GreatDictator

Posted by Greatdictator On February - 27 - 2009

Hello everyone this is Greatdictator and for a change, an interview with one of the developer over at Digitalmindsoft, who is currently working on a title with big potential Men of War, I advise you guys to go check it out it worth it.

Hi, thanks for this interview.

First of all, can you introduce yourself to our readers? What is your job and responsibilities in the Men of War project.

My name is Chris Kramer and I’m Managing Director of Digitalmindsoft. In Men of War I was responsible for outsourcing and project management tasks, as well as map and mission design. I was also working on the cinematic experience the game delivers.

Men of War is a World War II game, an era that quantities of games already cover. Why did you decide to go back to World War II, a genre that has been done several times over? What does your game offer that we didn’t already saw in countless other games and that could attract players that think they’ve seen it all in term of the era and in term of the real time strategy genre?

We could have searched for a more innovative or less used scenario. However we decided to put all our energy into the impressive gameplay of Men of War. Our task was to give Men of War an unique level of depth, as well as a gameplay you don’t see in any other game no matter they are in the same genre or cover the same topic. World War II is a huge topic with a massive amount of scenarios involved, a topic that offered us a lot of features and technology to add.

What new players will attract for sure is the enormously level of detail the game has, if it comes to the point that every soldier carries his own inventory, or that every AI soldier reacts to the environment and to the enemy on its own, or the most detailed armour penetration system ever created in the genre. You have barely any limitation in defeating your enemy and thus the game entertains you for many months, especially in multiplayer.

In Men of War players can take control of an individual soldier, it’s a fairly unique feature that very few RTS games ever included when did you come up with this unique gameplay element?

When the first part of the series was under development by Best Way, they added the basics of the feature at a very early stage of development. The game had only very simply AI and path finding routines, so they added this feature as a temporarily substitute to the very limited control mechanism. The feature went on growing with the time and Best Way liked it more and more until it became one of the most unique features in the genre and a key element of Men of War’s gameplay.

Did you guys at some point think about making a modern times tactical RTS game set in the Middle east regions or other hotspot regions of the world where conflict could occur?

“Could” is the very point, we don’t want to use an actual or uprising conflict for our games for moral reasons. I simply find it very unattractive to entertain with conflicts that aren’t solved and are still going on, it would hurt too many feelings, especially when it comes to involved parties.

More interesting and likely would be some slightly futuristic, complete sci-fi or another time period in history.

The Men of War engine seem very good. Can you tell us about the history of this engine, is it built from scratch or an already used engine. If it an already used engine, what other games use it that our reader could be interested to try and what kind of improvement does the engine has gain during the creation of Men of War?

Men of War’s engine is built on the GEM engine from Best Way, in fact MoW uses the GEM 2.5 engine whereas the first part in the series called Soldiers: Heroes of World War II featured GEM 1. It’s improved in many aspects, graphics wise, technology wise, physics wise and especially performance wise.

We are noticing that Men of War has a colorful, nearly joyful color tone, while most recent video games have a gray or brown feeling, is there any reason for this artistic look to the game?

Yes, we don’t want to have “yet another” game. To be fair, Men of War has quite some dark scenes too, however we wanted to have a colour balance to keep the game refreshing, even after quite some gaming hours.

While playing the beta we noticed a great attention to the vehicle damages which are very realistic from our point of view. Realism in the game work both ways, you can destroy the enemies by aiming at the weak points but you can also be destroyed the same way. What advice would you give to new players that are not use to such realism in video games?

Be open, try stuff out, there is always something you can learn in MoW. I myself find out strategies after years, just because you have so much options. A great help of course is to watch matches from players like Attila, they teach you a lot. Try what you would do in real life and find out how well it works in MoW.

What I also recommend is to play with friends to learn the game, you get a faster feedback and they can explain their moves and how they did something. Learning together is always a lot more joyful.

An other aspect we experienced in the beta is the great extent of the individual and collective AI capacity. How smart is the game AI and could you gives example of what kind of amazing thing the A able to do?

Besides most RTS/RTT the game doesn’t have a master AI that moves troops around and gives them orders. In Singleplayer they have a certain guideline from the mission designer, for example their tasks and attack points, but other than that they are acting on their own and have an individual smart AI, you usually only know from first-person-shooters.

So the unique element is the group communication, that means individual AIs will communicate with other AIs in the same area, they will attack together or retreat together, depending on their situation. If they are under heavy fire they will come up sneaking and if they get hit, they will run back to cover and try to heal themselves, whether they act cowardly or heroic depends on the AIs decisions, not on the mission script. This AI makes the game feel very realistic and ads so much to the replay value of it. You never know what the AI is up to.

There are many features to Men of War which one would you say your most proud of?

It comes all together, Direct control would be useless without detailed physics, physics on the other hand wouldn’t make a difference without direct control and the micromanagement abilities. Of course direct control is a totally outstanding feature, but I’m proud of how everything comes together and supports the idea behind the game, rather than just an individual feature.

Is there any plans on having updates with more then unit balancing in the future, like expansion, sequels?

Let’s release this great game to everyone first, than we shall talk about the future =)

Thanks for you time!
You’re welcome!

Defense Grid The Awakening Demo review

Posted by Greatdictator On January - 17 - 2009

Something really quick …and the written review here isnt the text but things i missed out and or might have not mentioned

Defense Grid Demo written review

Now the best way you can describe Defense Grid is a Sci Fi version of the Warcraft 3 map Tower Defense and quite personally i prefer this one for a couple of reason first off the graphics are well polished , art style is great in level design and enemys …now the enemys there ae several of them in the demo and alot more in the full version but the most interestign is the one who can teleport an enemy infront of him…but DAMN those boss enemys are quite though.

The main goal of the defense game is to prevent the enemy from obtaining the power cores and if i heard right you lose power in a sector the more you lose of them…an additional danger to this is the fact that once the enemys that are killed while carrying them the cores dont respawn but slowly drift back and they can be recaptured by the enemys if they get too close.

Now all towers dont work the same so range and attacks might differ so you also have to think about where your going to place them as well for example the flamethrower tower has low attack but can attack multiple enemys at once and has a low range so you have to put it somewhere where enemys pile up and where he can hit the most of them , or the laser tower which burns enemys after it stoped shooting the enemys will continue to take burn damage until they cool off.

As stated in the review the gameplay is implemented with the level design but i aint sure if theres a pause button but if there isnt then that adds to sort of a need for quick thinking especially when you see the aliens comeing closer on the radar…i still find the radar to be a very nice thougch so you know which kind of enemys are comeing.

Now on a last note i know that this review is short but…hey i didnt play that much alright.
The game supports achivments as well and the games interface as well as its camera as yuve seen there is no mouse cursor…which made me instantly think if the developers would have ported this onto the Xbox Live Market place since like is said the games interface definetly would be up to the job of playing this game with a joystick and it isnt as fastpaced as other console RTS games so the palyer has time to select tha twhich he wants and build it up.

All in all i hardly found any complaints except that the demo was short…so i would urge you all to go out and try the game hopefully you guys will like it .

Have fun.

Evil Genius review and …game design ?

Posted by Greatdictator On January - 12 - 2009

Yes you read it right, I finally have another review up and i found something that some of you guys might be interested in…but first a review :D….of 2009 DUN DUN DUN!!!!

btw i was sick on the day i recorded my voice

basics of what i was talking about
EG review

Focus on style and base design

Almost like Dungeon keeper

Funny AOI missions like stealing the Eifel Tower by shrinking it , planting a fake diplomat
in one of the 5 factions and stealing mr Sunggules

Loot is usefull for more then just decorateing like researching new items

You get a funny radio broadcast even if youll mostly hear the same one

would have been better with cinematics for some AOI

Traps combos encourage base design and trap laying by rewarding combos with money

Minios are easy to know what they do and research is fun and simple

AI is good but it will do some really stupid things at times

Agents and tourists

Building hotels to occupy tourists

Stats and minion care

Lots of funny interrogations and funny objects like brain washing machine

Certian traps are funny as well

game is frustrateing and fun at the same time mostly due to how long it takes
for you to gather money

lots of looney and creative henchmen…and wierd too

Super agents are annoying but satisfeing when you finally defeat them

Evil geniuses have some diffrneces but more locations or special islands for each would
have been better

only 3 same superweapons for each

Game is fun

The game design video:

hope you enjoy
