Game Aftershock: Orcs Must Die! Review

Posted by Attila On November - 29 - 2011

Orcs Must Die! is an action, humoristic, tower base, 3rd person, fantasy game with a World of Warcraft kind of graphic. Just saying that you should ask yourself, what the hell can that be.

Well the first thing I would say, is that normally I would not have bought this game, and actually somebody gave it to me. If not this review would never have existed… And that would be a shame. Because this game is actually a lot of fun and certainly worth buying.

One of the first thing you notice as you launch this game is that it run extremely smoothly at all time. This is clearly due to the fact it’s a cartoon or artistically form of graphic as oppose to aiming for realism. The graphic really remind us of World Of Warcraft for some reason, with colorful environment and big gray castle environment. The enemies are funny looking and your character is an undisciplined wizard, last survivor that defend the real world from the orc invasion. In clear it’s a not too serious kind of mix that make this game really joyful to play.

The main concept of the game is that an evil wizard took over the minds of the orc and force them to rush toward the gate between this world and the reality. When we say rush, it’s really a mindless rush. The enemies nearly don’t care about anything else then going to that objective and literally ignore you for the most part. This mean that your job is not so much to fight them but simply to slow them down and kill them all. To do so you have a wide range of traps as well as a few spell, weapons and upgrade to your character that you unlock from level to level. The fun of the game consist mostly in figuring out the most creative way to combine the traps in order to stop of flow of orcs. While that may appear simple it actually is much more challenging then expected since the level design pose all kind of constraint. These constraint are mostly due to the fact that you need to finance those traps by killing orcs. This mean that you can only get as many traps as the number of orc you kill and since your character cannot be everywhere at the same time you need to rely on those traps. On the other hand it’s rare that a trap system will be flawless, even with tons of traps you will still have to stop some orc by yourself.

These constrain make this game smart and fast paced. This is even more true when you start playing at nightmare difficulty that is certainly one of the most fun and challenging gameplay we had in single player in a long time. You may end up being totally exhausted after playing such level due to the intensity and concentration required by this game. This game really did impress us in how well design it is and how fun it turned out to be.

To conclude we highly recommend you to get this game, it’s fairly cheap and does provide between 10 and 20 hours of enjoyment that will make you happy. The only down side of this game is that it doesn’t have any coop or multiplayer. While there are 24 well done level, once you know them all and how to finish them it can easily be call linear or repetitive since they are like puzzle that once resolved are easy to resolve again. The fun you will have in this game will certainly compensate for those few minor complain not to mention that the gave is well supported and has been patch many time already and two DLC have been released already to prevent you from getting tired of it.

Game Aftershock: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad Review

Posted by Attila On November - 29 - 2011

Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad unlike many first person shooter is a game that aim at giving you a realistic world war 2 experience on the Eastern Front.

The localization of the action is a welcome aspect of this series. It put you on the eastern front, a front that has been certainly one of the decisive part of the War and is largely under explored by the main stream games, if not only to reproduce scene from movies everybody saw. Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad actually put you in some important moment of the war on the eastern front and the single player experience gives you some introduction with videos that explain the context of each map that center around the battle of Stalingrad. The story of the game tend to limit itself to these videos and the singleplayer is a mirror of the multiplayer with bots. Those AI offer some good training in preparation to the real deal the multiplayer.

The action happens in a very well designed environment that seems to come out directly out of black and white film of the real event. The maps are very well done graphically and are rich in details, the texture are maybe a little dark but this give a dark war movie style to the game that seem appropriate when it comes to recreate the atmosphere of this bloody front. While the environment is largely undestructible, few spot can be blown up by engineer explosive to open some alternative path, allowing your side to advance in this very deadly environment. The lethality of the environment is due in great part to the narrow nature of the maps that rarely give you more then 3 or 4 possible ways to advance or defend. Because this game really is mostly about advancing or defending.

To advance your team need to outnumber the enemies in a zone to capture it. These zones are represented by a square on the map. To push the front you need to hold a series of zones before being able to push to the next series of zones. This principle is actually very effective at keeping the action going, forcing both side to move to these different zone to achieve victory. As a rule the hard part isn’t so much to capture the zone, but mostly to actually reach those zone. The game make you spawn pretty far away as a rule allowing the defender to entrench themselves in very easily defensible position forcing the attacking side to play tactically or simply outnumbering the defenders that will run out of ammo at some point.

It’s clear that the maps of Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad as well has the game mechanic are well design with teamplay in mind. There is plenty of cover and ways to flank the enemies, on the other hand the realistic nature of the game prevent any form of cohesion between the players, this is due to the fact that everybody die in one hit (nearly). The game allow you to spawn either at one of 2 spawn position or on the squad leader. As a rule the squad leader dies, so that usually mean you spawn at one of 2 spawn position. There are no guaranty that the rest of your squad will spawn at the same position. If they didn’t die at the same time as you, there is no point waiting for them. It’s also unlikely that they will wait for you. So the squad system of the game appear to be very much an illusion and the action generally consist at being a bunch on individually running and gunning spread out a little like Call of Duty Series and it’s a little disappointing to say the least.

In fact one of the amazing feature of the game, the cover system, should be a great teamplay enforcer. Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad offer one of the best system of cover we ever saw in a first person shooter. The most impressive aspect of this system is that it’s intuitive, effective, easy to use, fun to use and all that while keeping you inside your first person view. So you can suppress the enemies with blind fire, you can use nearly every thing as a position to increase you gun stability. You can take take a small peek and really this system is great! The only issu with this system is that if you use it, your nearly as good as dead both in single player and multiplayer.

From our experience at it, the reason why this amazing cover system turn out to be nearly useless is that Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad aiming system is actually way to easy. One of the main charm of Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 and it’s popular mod Darkest Hour: Europe ’44-’45 was that aiming was really a pain. To actually manage to be good at it, you really have to play a lot and train yourself at it. While in Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad it’s really really easy to hit somebody even beyond 200m with a rifle even without any scope. With submachine gun you can also aim very well bellow 100m and with machinegun you can single shot the enemies from a far easily. The ease of use combined with the realistic nature of the damage those weapon gives, mean that you will die a lot playing this game. Also the fact that it’s so easy to kill your enemies as it is easy to die make the multiplayer of Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad a bit frustrating. We explain this by the fact that killing your enemies is easy and doesn’t give you much of a reward, while dying so easily is frustrating. The multiplayer experience as a result gives more frustration then pleasure in the end and it’s a fairly surprising result since the game main focus is the multiplayer. Such a “frustrating” result probably could have been avoided by randomizing the bullets spread and could have been justified by wind or poor quality of weapon due to the cold or something. One thing is sure the game feel little a like the original and the firefights are usually short and rarely feel satisfying especially in the context where the team play is nearly none existent and useless.

To conclude this game is well done, visually the game look good but the requirement to run it smoothly seems a bit high. The cover system did impress us a lot and it’s just a shame that it doesn’t turn out to be an effective way to fight in the multiplayer. The multiplayer is well design but the nature of the aiming system turn what could be a fun experience into something fairly frustrating. One thing is sure Tripwire seem to be determined to support the game well and address the community complain and they have already released many updates that have fix many issue. They will also release a DLC that focus on the pacific theater. So we are looking forward to where Tripwire Interactive with lead the game base on all the community feedback they received since the release.

RAF Red Arrows at the Québec International AirShow

Posted by Attila On July - 24 - 2010

This video show the RAF Red Arrows at the Québec International AirShow on June 14, 2008. I think it’s a good recording considering the technical limitation we had, The red Arrows had the merit to stay close of the airport allowing uncut scene with them. It was very impressive to watch them fly in very close formation.

This video was recorded the week previous to the Québec International AirShow in june 2008. The US Navy Blue Angels fly F-18 hornet that are big and slower then the USAF Thunderbirds F-16. So it was easier to record them and since we heard them before seeing them it was much easier to spot them and track them with the camera. So Enjoy and leave comments!

This is a video of the US Air Force’s Thunderbirds who came at the Québec International Air Show. This recording was done during the week previous to the air show, on June 12 and June 13, 2008. This air show was probably one of the biggest ever since there was the US Air Force Thunderbirds, the US Navy’s Blue Angels, The Royal Air Force Red Arrows, The Canadian Air Force Showbird and a CF-18 from the Canadian air force flying over us. This is the first of a series of video covering this Air show and it was recorded with a very simple hand held camera, so this first video was mostly our training at recording very fast moving planes and we got better at it as you will see in future videos. Enjoy and we are looking forward to feedback.

This second video was recorded at the airshow on June 14, 2008. It was a rainy day so the Thunderbirds didn’t do all they usually do. But i think we did a good job at recording it considering the recording conditions. Enjoy

This video was recorded on the June 15, 2008 from a road that has a good view over the valley. This video show well the speed of the F-16 and give an interesting point of view over the Thunderbirds Airshow.

Greatdictator reviews : Point Lookout DLC

Posted by Greatdictator On September - 17 - 2009

Welcome to the murky swampland of Point Lookout . Travelers beware for the swamplands lurk with inbred mutated hillbillys and swamp Ghouls…but whats the difference ey ?

The 4th and definitely one of the best of the bunch in the 5 part DLC that Bethesda studio has set out to make is definitely worth getting , for not just being able to explore alot more off a new land that isnt a complete and desolate wasteland as well as getting new toys , perks and enemys to kill ….but do beware for the enemy’s here are without a doubt some of the toughest youll meet so caution is advised .
The hillbillys are as funny as they are stereotypical inbreds with the things tehy have too say , there’s a bigger variety of new quests , and the Maryland swampland is quite an interesting setting.

So save up some caps or use stealth to steal this DLC for Fallout 3

Posted by Greatdictator On July - 17 - 2009

Now here a quite interesting use for the Freespace engine….a starfox mod…yes although this one does seem to be more on the sim side then the original which was arcade. I am quite looking forward to it and….I do hope that they put in the do a barrel roll line in there cause it certainly wouldn’t be starfox without that in my opinion without further ado here the trailer for it an do note that i found this today :P

Greatdictator reviews : Overlord 2

Posted by Greatdictator On July - 6 - 2009

Welcome to the written portion of the Overlord 2 review for DYG hope you enjoy it .

A game like Overlord 2 is undoubtedly one of those game that isn’t exactly THE BEST but is rather close up there , by not only being fun but also adding its own style and charm ….and even yes it is sorta like pikmin….its in my eyes from what I know of and seen of pikmin .better.

Overlord 2 is an overall improvement over the original , the story starts out by Gnarl telling you that the minions have been scouring the lands for a new Overlord , since at the ending of raising hell one can see one of the mistresses pregnant , so you start out as a child in the small town of Nordberg there’s almost something Fable 2′ish to it.

Once you manage to escape the now new power in the land namely the Glorious empire that has put a ban on all things magic…and guess what you have magic in your veins , now I guess one can think of these guys as nazis of magic but whatever the reason once you escape them and get frozen your minions take you towards your new underground tower where they raise you up till your old enough to start bashing baby seals .
As mentioned in the video review the games story is still interesting just like the first one and the expansion .

Gameplay has been overall improved with not just making the minions even more fun to use , one of the main new features are the mounts the mounts are what they imply mountable animals , sadly the even though there are 3 mount types for various colors they aren’t used as much as you do the wolves so that’s a bit disappointing but its still fun when you do use them , this game is a lot more focused on minions and their ability’s sure most of the puzzles are still based on what color minion you have but this time their a bit more challenging and requier’s a bit more active role , some minions like the blues can now blink through enemy’s if you guide them through it or to clear away the magic radiation in the tower wastelands area .

2 Additional gameplay mechanic’s are the catapult sections and the ships sections , while they are both fun and enjoyable the game doesn’t implement the ship as much as I had initially hoped for hell they could have made a ship battle between the elf’s and the empire and you could have boarded an empire ship with a catapult and there you go you get the best of both worlds .

The spells have pretty much been revamped instead of having a fireball as your first magic spell you get a lighting attack initially this isn’t very usefull against enemy’s , but the alternative use for it is so much better you can now actually take control over slaves , people and citizens and turn them into….your slaves ( double loss for the slaves then he he ) , while in an area that isnt a town you’ve already conquer’d these slaves serve as cannon fodder to distract the enemy until you can kill them , while in a conquer’d town you have a hundred citizens that can be either turned into slaves or be killed since instead of being evil and somewhat evil you choose between being EVIL and REALLY evil ( in other words being dominant or being chaotic ).
The light RPG mehanics are present but expanded this time by having the ability to upgrade your minion’s hives , but the forging is a bit more streamlined this time around but lost a bit of a personal touch to it though .

As mentioned in the video review the game , the new enemy’s also pose a whole new level of challenge where I hardly died in the original I found it rather difficult to survive as many times in this one , since the formation ability gives the empire units almost ridiculous defensive boost until you kill their commander that is which adds a somewhat more tactical thought to the game .

One of the more fun aspects is still the ability to turn your tower or domain of evil more comfy , this time you have a lot more options by having 3 different mistresses ( one being a ghost …so that’s akward if you please her into bed ) whoever you choose to be first mistress you get her set of stuff of course you can change between mistresses to mix it up as much as you like .

The graphics and art design is even better then the original , with small animations touches in both minions and the animations…in all of this both video and this text I forgot to mention that the humor is still present , weather it be the fat …and almost scary fairy’s to the large emphasis on killing baby seals it still retains the same humor as the original although , some of the best lines are still delivers by Gnarl although there aren’t as many of them ( in my opinion ) as there were in the original .
For some reason the minion AI doesn’t seem as effect when it comes to bringing back stuff in the original after they break something they pick it up and put it on or bring it to you but in this one there were more then enough times where I had to send out another minion to pick it up , but the minion AI besides on that aspect is an improvement .

Overall this Overlord is an improvement over his predecessor ….and he didn’t lock himself in an eternal abyss , but like its predecessor it isn’t a perfect game but its still good….erh bad EVIL fun

Check in again when I review Paraworld .

And the Winner is… (Men of War Video Contest Results)

Posted by Attila On June - 3 - 2009

Finally, the voting period is over for the Men of War Video Contest and the data collected by the poll system have been analyzed by the Dateyourgame’s Elite Datamining Squad! It has clearly been a heated voting process.

We would like to thank and compliment all the participants who created videos for this contest and congratulate the six finalists who were chosen by a jury from Dateyourgame and Digitalminsoft and will earned a participation prize!

We were agreeably surprised by the number of participants. Some finalists have clearly been able to mobilize people to vote for their video, which is exactly the kind enthusiasm and community participation we were looking for! We wanted you to share your passion for Men of War with the most people possible and we think that this goal has been reached!

Also by using an open voting process we had two objectives:

  • To chose the Grand Prize Winner, who will receive a Men Of War copy signed by members of the Men Of War Development team.
  • To give one copy of MoW to two registered Dateyourgame members who voted.

To do so we tried to use the most democratic process by allowing anybody to vote. It was then possible to participants to use their social network to promote their videos and increase their chance of winning the contest.

By doing so we knowingly exposed the voting process to some sort of abuses. To reassure the finalists, the voting system we used has known vulnerabilities easy to exploit that we were aware of. We were hoping that all the participants would play by the rules, but as some have noticed, it was not the case. Does these behaviors affected the end results. The answer is: NO.

Since we were expecting that kind of situation from the start, we were able to detect fraud by allowing the behavior during the voting process. Like an IT strategist said: “Turn a Security Weakness into Security Enhancement”. In clear, the announced results were cleaned of all the invalid votes. The following table includes the results for Registered members and Guest users.

You will notice that DJ Szopen had obviously a quite effective strategy to bring Guest users. But it wasn’t enough to compensate for amount of appreciation the IIIYURYIII’s video earned when Registered members and Guest Users are considered all together.

Finalists From Members From Guests Total
DerLandsser 3.95% 1.58% 2.04%
Evilsausage 7.89% 7.28% 7.40%
Dl.MiciMacko 7.89% 0.00% 1.53%
DJ Szopen 9.21% 36.71% 31.38%
ValiantDuke 17.11% 23.42% 22.19%
IIIYURYIII 53.95% 31.01% 35.46%
Valid votes: 392 100.00% 100.00% 100.00%

We declare IIIYURYIII the Winner of the Men of War Fan Made Videos Contest and you can see why by watching his video!

Thanks again to all of you who participate by creating videos or by voting.
