Rome Total War Carthage Chronicle Battle 08

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Here is a battle I did against the senate; from that point in the campaign I included some Campaign game play since people were asking for contextual information.

This battle is a kind of assassination mission against the senate. Considering the senate has 9 star commanders, and many many body guards. I had to fight this menace to advance on the Scipii territory. So in the battle I used all my cavalry to kill as many generals as I could with light cavalry. I kill 4 of them and as you can see that was challenging. Then Senate unit are far more developed then the other Roman faction and my light infantry doesn’t last long against those. So as soon as my assassination thing was done, I pulled back with many casualties indeed, but with an enemy far weaker in leadership.

Here is a good example of a good use of infantry and cavalry for siege. Personally I don’t recommend using cavalry in a city but in that case it proved to be very effective. As you can see I enter the city and secure my beach head into the city. After some fighting I start advancing. I send my cavalry on the Left as my infantry core attack from the center. Ultimately that proved very useful since the Romans had 4 general body guard units. I divided them and was able to destroy them when they were divided. The victory was clear once I charged the faction leader from the back with my cavalry, eliminating the main menace against my troops. I lost one general in that battle but since the enemy lost 4, it was a fair share.

This battle is my landing in Italy. As you can see once again I have a big cavalry force. With that cavalry I move around attack the enemies on many front and rout them really fast.

Enjoy the Hunt ;)

Rome Total War Carthage Chronicles Battle 05

This siege is the first battle in the war against the Gauls. (They started it). Since I was without doubt totally outnumbered. This forced me to use a feature of Rome Total War and a little tactic. So I deployed my infantry in the town center this way they would not rout. Once my forces were engage, I ordered my cavalry that was in a secure place to attack from the back. It was really risky but my attack from behind created a totally routing of the Gauls army is only a few light cavalry lost.

In this battle you can see how the cavalry superiority can make a huge difference even with light cavalry. With my cavalry I destroy the enemy cavalry at first, and isolated the enemy general and kill him. The interesting this to note is how many dead Libyan spearman I lost against the Hastati. It just shows how bad Carthaginian infantry is at start. So the only way to advance is by making huge cavalry force and use them as a horde. Even if I do agree that doesn’t really require much skill to move that huge horde around…

Rome Total War Carthage Chronicles Battle 03

After taking the control of Sicily the Brutii try to counter attack me with all they have.

This battle is really impressive in my option and really shows some skill with the light cavalry. (I think Medieval II Total War made me dislearned that…) In this battle I really use the infantry as a distraction as my cavalry does all the job. I move my cavalry around divided and encircling the enemies and then concentrate all my force on one enemy unit at a time. I must admit I’m impressing by my perfect coordination between all those groups of cavalry…

Rome Total War Carthage Chronicles: Battle 02

I must say those old battle are really funny to watch since I really don’t remember what happened in them. :D

This second battle was against the Greek in Sicily. Since the Roman were previously kicked out of Sicily, the Greek were the second menace on the island. The main advantage of destroying Greece force on that Island is really that you can be sure they won’t come back later. ;)

This battle is really interesting, my Iberian infantry and town militia were really no match against phalanx troops, so I had to do a really great job with my light cavalry to isolate the enemies and kill them one unit at a time.

I must say I’m a little surprise by my strategy (Seem I have evolved since then, :) ). I divide my cavalry into two group, my general and elephant and my light cavalry on the other flank. I engaged my general with elephant first on the right flank against archer. They slowly advanced into the enemy rank. I only engaged my light cavalry on the Left flank after they got engage first. Finally I engaged my main force only when I became sure that they would not rout when in front of the phalanx and that my cavalry could do most of the job from attacking in the back.

That was an other nice battle: D

Rome Total War Carthage Chronicles Battle 01

Since I’m on a kind a “vacation” from gaming in general, I think I will comment the Carthage Chronicles, I never really gave much tactical explanation on this original Campaign Chronicles.

This battle was the first of the game maybe on the turn 2 or 4. When you play Carthage in Rome Total War, really important to take control of Sicily as fast as you can and this battle is part of that effort. The elephant are as you can see in that battle a really important part of the strategy when well combines with light cavalry. Those troop combinations allow delivering a strong punch, the elephant open the enemy rank and the cavalry keep the pressure, making the enemy army more likely to flee.

But as you can see, they also are a risk to your own troop and can become out of control, when it happen you are in big trouble, so make your troops flee the elephant to reduce casualties.

The Carthaginian infantry isn’t very good at start, that’s why I keep my main infantry in the back and make most of the job without them. The weakness of the infantry is well demonstrated by the fact that my infantry broke when fighting the enemy general.

This first battle opened the way to kick the Romans out of Sicily.
