Xbox 360, Playstation 3 (PS3), WII and PC a point of view
Today I Was ask an interesting question.
Question
Which console do you prefer, the Xbox 360 is very unstable and the Wii is for kids, and the PS3 has a few number of games?
My answer is
Well the Wii is interesting, because it has games you won’t see on a PC.
As for Xbox and PS3 they have game similar to PC with half the quality of PC games.
If they didn’t existed PC gaming would have far better game then we are currently stuck with because there would be more brain, thinker, designer, worker working on a “universally” generalized console that every one has at home, making those game more accessible instead of being restricted to a small hardware compose of computer hardware that is prohibited of reaching his full potential by being lock in a very restricted operational system. Consoles are a plague that limit human imagination by imposing hardware limitation.
(I heard countless designer saying that on xbox they were limited by the hardware all those years)
This is confirm by comparing the concept of Halo 1 in 1999 and looking at the resulting Halo one… it’s really a depressing experience. Halo 1 and 2 don’t reach 1/3 of the potential announced for the Mac and PC version of Halo back in 1999.
Now instead of Having totally open environment we are still jam in terribly linear level.
Halo: Combat Evolved has a good name for what it is.
With the concept of 1999, Halo: Combat Revolution would have been a more accurate name.
Now the only hope of finally getting rid of this console imposed linearity is Crysis a PC exclusive video game. But still it probably will be linear with a lot of space between the walls.
We are still waiting for that Halo Ring where you could walk around every foot of it in 1999 making Oblivion lot like a baby game (Oblivion really use a map system similar to the Halo concept of 1999).
Console made us waste 7 years of video game evolution. The game that we now see appear on next gen console are game that could have emerge on PC in 2000-2005.
In conclusion, my definite choice since 1999 is the PC console since I don’t want to finance half games that don’t reach the full potential they have because of hardware limitation.
Now I’m curious what would be your answer to this question?

mmm i like tow, the wii for the new control and the new game mode but the grafics are really bad but its very fun when you play whit your friends, destroying the face of your friend in wii sports or making your father in the mee mode, the game of zelda its very good and some more game that i dont remember the name hehe.
i also prefer the PC because the strategy games like MTW2, starcraft 2 (if i have in the future hehe) simcity 4 and more only heve the PC and are very good whit the grafics and all (if you have a good video card)

My choice would have to be the 360. The pc is a great console, but I find that you get more lag, and the controls aren’t quite as smooth as a controller.
The 360 has a great feature, that hopefully all consoles will adopt. Acheivements. Showing off how good you are is a great feature, and it’s fun to unlock new acheivements.
I like the ability to play xbox on a tv anywhere in the house, while someone else is on the pc.

I agree….the PC is a far better system….the Xbox 360 and PS3 are kinda like mini computers though….they are improving the gaming consoles so much….there are only 2 problems with the computer….#1 the good ones that are capable of doing all these newer games are very pricy…unless you get lucky at a yard sale…..and #2 the gaming consoles are easier to play 1st person shooters…in my opinion…..I think it is easier to control both movement and a weapon with a controller….and not a keyboard and mouse

Interesting…and yes i agree PC all the way

hehe, i knew that you will post something like this, i agree with you 100%.

I maybe go a little hard on console but i think the resulting fragmentation of creativity while really lucrative isn’t a good thing for the quality of games.
It’s alway a little hard to make understand to new gamers that don’t know older games and why they were so good and probably won’t play them because they have bad graphic…
By experience graphic is an illusion that really doesn’t reflect the quality of a game.

I totally agree with you about the smoothness issue, It’s mostly link to the endless evolving of PC hardware that push the developer to alway explore new technology and possibility. But all that comes with a very high price to the consumer.

Pc is the best for graphics, but is very expensive i must say, you will need like 3.000$ dollar for a powerful computer, that makes the difference
July 13th, 2007 at 10:58 am
They should improve all of these consoles on market.
July 13th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Pc games are good BUT my problem is always that you have to always upgrade your pc, that’s why I’m more a playstation guy: the games are all compatible with a playstation, you don’t have to watch system requirements or anything.
July 13th, 2007 at 11:11 am
yeah the annoying thing about pc game is the “system requierment” in general game work good on computer that don’t exist yet… I played two years old game and they still lag on graphic card that didn’t existed at the time, just absurd.
July 13th, 2007 at 3:06 pm
Yeah PCs are way to expensive. I don’t have 3500$ to spend on a high end PC which might be obsolete a year and a half. Thats why I bought a Xbox360. They have a alot of the same games that PCs have. Sure the graphics in the game won’t have extra shine that a high end pc would add to it but its basically the same game.
July 13th, 2007 at 11:19 pm
I don’t find much difference between the pc and 360 in prices. In the long run
July 14th, 2007 at 8:39 am
well in general I buy computer arround 700$ customise them a little with the material I already have and overall the value is arround 1000$ and it last me two years 1/2.

THE PS2 POWNS ALL. For newer i say xbox, but every single game on x box is on computer. PS2 POWNS BECAUSE IT HAS RARE GAMES (NOT ON THE PC) LIKE THE JAK SERIES AND MERCANERIES!!!!!
July 15th, 2007 at 1:59 am
Pc wins all the way though
July 15th, 2007 at 1:59 am
that’s not bad, but the price of games makes a difference.
Now the 360 will last 3+ years, due to the new extended warrantly for all consoles.
I still find it similiar in prices because of all the extra stuff for the 360- headsets, xbox live, chargers, and extra controllers.
July 16th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
im not getting any of the new gen consoles, ther just a waste of good money, especially when my pc can play more games and do more stuff
July 17th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
PC is my main console right now, but I own a Wii and I’ve played 360 and PS3, and I gotta say, the PS3 is awful, they ripped off the motion sensitive controller from Nintendo, and there’s about… 5 good games on it. The 360 is good, but it’s pretty much nothing but sports games and violent shooters. The Wii has a nice variety of games, while the motion sensitive controllers supply a fun playing expierence.
July 17th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
yeah the Wii is the only console that seem to bring something new
July 18th, 2007 at 9:11 am
my computer is very old and it still can run high end games on atleast moderate graphics with no lag.
the only time i ever upraded it was for a newer graphics card wich i got on sale and for a good price, this required a bigger power supply but that also wasent expensive all around you can keep a good computer going for many years if you have the right hardware.
July 18th, 2007 at 11:20 am
yeah true
July 22nd, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Nah you guys are fare away, the PS3 are generly more powerfull than a pc. It just needs some time to get the great games on the market. Asassins Creed needs so much power that Attila’s pc would not run it.

Imagine 100.000 caracters ALL with a uniqe face, Now THAT needs a lot of power. PS3 dont have many good games right now, but it was the same with PS2. Just wait 6 months and you will see some awsome games.
But of course im going for the pc, there almost no rts games for XBOX 360, Wii or PS3.
July 22nd, 2007 at 9:23 pm
hehe we will see
July 24th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
I really can’t agree on your opinion. In contrast to your point of view, I think that the quality of PC games decreased in the last years. Nowadays customers are used to buy products that often didn’t even reach the Beta-Status. Due to the intensification of the competition on the PC market Software Studios have to produce low-level products concerning technology, the artistic freedom and, above all, the accuracy of the whole product. This is an extravagance that Game Studios that are working on console titles would never dream of. On PS, Xbox, and the Nintendo consoles, there are no such things as Patches und Bug-Fixing. Insofar this is a huge advantage in comparison to the PC.
Moreover, the graphics that exist on Xbox 360 (and hopefully on the PS3 in some months) are better or at least equal compared to the PC. Some days ago I played high-end games on Microsoft’s newest console and it was really overwhelming to experience such a graphical power.
Of course this is also a question of money. Would I really buy a Geforce 8800 Ultra for about 550-700€ or 750-950$?
The existence of different gaming and entertaining platforms is also something necessary. In general monocultures are not the solution of choice. The more systems we have, the more content we are.
And why are all the games we enjoy still so linear and even similiar? Fun is the most important thing in a game, if it is just not fun than all the technology and the sophisticated algorithms are worth nothing. Ergo, good design is crucial. But if a Producer gives up linearity than he also stops to control the game. This would be an exciting experiment but complete freedom wouldn’t be fun and all the effort that you have to put in such a project like one big free world was worthless. Linearity is the tool that ensures the quality of a game. Maybe there are only a few years left betweeen this game-generation and articifical and completely free worlds with an higher concentration of action created by assisting scripts or somehting similiar. Who knows?
July 24th, 2007 at 9:21 pm
I agree with you with all you point Vawyn.
But as for the linearity I don’t think it’s a forced path, for exemple Arma Combat operation offer you a kinda linear story on a island of 250km2.
A modder in multiplayer created a coop mission were you have to conquer all the map, so there isn’t much linearity in that.
So I think it’s now possible to do games that have very little linearity
July 25th, 2007 at 6:30 am
Hm, maybe I should take a look at it. Is Arma playable right now? As far as I know many were uncontent because it was quite buggy…
July 25th, 2007 at 7:44 am
Well the europeen version was buggy because it was released months ago, since them many bug were fix. There is still a few but considering the scale of the coops mission you can play on the net, this is forgettable. It’s more a simulation then a game.
