Saving Gamer from themself?

Finally CBC joined youtube. :)
Here is a small report they published on youtube about a solution for video game addict in China. I would really much like to know what you guys think about that video game solution.

I would also like to know, do you consider yourself an addict? ;)

(Since I’m on a video game break and survive it very well… I guess I’m not so much an addict, but still… i’m a fanatic. ;) )

interesant, also i’m not an addict, i really like the videogames but i dont play all the time like tat guys

  2. alf2142 Says:

Well im a little addicted :( (but not to one singel game like WoW)
But i dont play 24 hours a day. :P And in my case my addiction goes over after a while, then it goes back to Warhammer 40k (The tabeltop game) :D

  3. Attila Says:

yeah I think many people really overplay, seem even more the case in Asia where being a good gamer is far more appreciated culturally then here where people think it’s a waste of time.

I Think playing 24/24 hours is a far too much. If you play more then 4-6 hours a day that’s already a lot. The only time I ever play that much is when i have a free week end with a new game that has a great linear story and know that there is nothing else to do because of snow storm, or heavy rain.

The main problem is that after finishing a video game fast… the interest is gone… so, I think it’s better play less in a row, this way you enjoy the game longer! ;)

  4. Matt13333 Says:

I wouldn’t call myself an addict. I do spend parts of my day preforming other activities such as cycling and fencing. Even with these other activities, gaming does tend to neglect some aspects of my life. Especialy education.

The electric shock therapy is too much! Hasn’t that been proven to do nothing?

  5. simmy.uk Says:

24 hours a day is a little too much imo.

I find BF2 quit addictive, only because it is a really good game I enjoy. Sometimes I play for a couple of hours, then have a break. It is a good game but I find after a few hours I am bored of it and i’ll likly do something else. Unlike WOW, BF2 is a game that has a start and an ending. You play a round, then it’s over. WOW, is a never ending game which is why so many people get dangerously addicted to it.

  6. Attila Says:

I think they don’t use shock therapy the same way as western medicine, I think Chinese have developed a kind of soft shock therapies that work like acupuncture, I don’t think it’s a shock therapies like western medicine used it in the past. But still it’s “shocking” to know they can go that far. :)

I totally agree with you simmy.uk with the BF2 aspect of the game that has a start and a finish. I personnaly like games that I can play 30 min and quit it with the statisfaction of saying; I did the complete circle of the game in a short time that I enjoyed. If I want more, just make it an other shorth round.

When you think of WoW, It’s like… ok lets organize a Raid… here goes 1 hours awaiting every 39 other players to come.
Ok all ready… lets go, here goes 2-3-4 hours maybe even 6 hours… That’s just endless…

I think overall, game with many small success, where you can stop to play when you want because of the flexibility they have, are far more enjoyable then game where you need to play hours to get 1 huge success.

I like to say that World of Warcraft is more a job then it is a game, people should get pay to play it and not the other way around ;)

  7. alf2142 Says:

Some people dont know when to stopp. Ive heard of people that have died of overgaming in Asia.

  8. Attila Says:

yeah, I think there is maybe one or two people that died of self starvation and lack of sleep in Korea because video games. Of course those are the worse case, my guess would be that there is a couple that got into the hospital and we never heard of those.

  9. BobWolf Says:

I want to join that program! OMG !

I played a lot to WoW.. i played a lot to a lot of games. Still, now i`m not playing anymore. What is the problem with addiction to Video game ? If you work, or go to school, and you you play all the other time to video game its your damn prob! :)

Parents are just jealous people because they can`t play because they don`t understand !

Hehe i think moderation is the best way in everything..

  10. Illuvatar Says:

I’m Chinese, I understand my parents decisons, I don’t game that much except for Half-Life, Halo, and MTW2, also I don’t find other games that addicting. My gaming is limited so I can”t lose myself in the ‘matrix’ as some people call it.

I have a friends who are Chinese that play games every day and get B+s on their tests, I wonder how they did it?

  11. Attila Says:

Well it really depend people, I was use to play a lot when I was at college and university. But still had good mark.

I think the main challenge was to optimize my time for both activities. In a way I think having a competing interest between school and video games was good thing for me. But I think for most people it really doesn’t work well.

I think I succeeded mostly because I basically remember everything as image in my head. I guess that’s why I’m good in history. ;)

I construct what I need to learn as mental representation in my head. So I have a clear print of the event and don’t need to study as much later since I remember it nearly like a movie. Of course that’s not as simple when you talk about math where I’m terrible. ;)

I think one of the main challenge of education isn’t so much to know about what they want you to learn, but it’s more to find your own way to learn and I think that in a way, video game can help you find your way to learn. Video games allow you to learn about yourself and your limits as a player but also as a learning being.

It’s all a question of having the right balance. :)

  12. simmy.uk Says:

Too much of a good thing is bad

  13. enfrijolada Says:

    yeah im whit simmy.uk

  14. Matt13333 Says:

“Too much of a good thing is bad”

Correction: Too much of anything is bad. Especialy good things like you said. ;)

  15. LeeroyFan101 Says:

Hmmm China has a pretty good system. Boot camp would really be good for game addicts since well most of them are either really weak and skinny from lack of movement or really obese from just eating snack packs and playing computer.

  16. Attila Says:

Yeah boot camp would be funny. Look similar to air soft.

I think that if school had more physical by default, we would have a society far healthier now. Anyway “an healthy mind in an healthy body”.

The healthier you are the better you will be at video gaming :)

  17. Saint Nicholas Says:

I completely agree with that last comment, Attila. Two years ago, I was an addict. I was a complete physical wreck. I realized it, and started running, doing crunches, and doing push ups. Today I way 150 pounds, have a sixpack, can bench 200, and am better at videogames and life in general than I have ever been. It feels really great, and I did not spend a single dollar on fancy excersise equiptment. I just ate a little less, and excersized. To anyone reading this with a weight problem: you can get yourself out if it; it takes time, but you can do it.

  18. Attila Says:

That’s really encouraging to know Saint Nicholas.

It’s really a question of self discipline, no need to buy any false promise equipment. It’s more a question of discipline and self awareness that make people reach healthiness.

It take time and determination but the benefit are big.

Personally I abused a little and payed for it. So I slowly walk the path of losing some weight and eat less.

As Moliere (great French writer) putted it “You must eat to live and not live to eat.” ;)

  19. enfrijolada Says:

interesant, that words are really interesant hahahaha

  20. Attila Says:

hehe, yeah French author really say funny stuff sometime. Worth discover them. :)

  21. chris Says:

there as been an increase in gaming addiction recently, as anyone seen that vid of that austrlian kid who played wow so much he devolped a american accent? he said the longest he played for was 2day 8 hours with out water and sleep or a toilet break!
i just people who get addit like that need help so i do agree with these camps it might save them from wateing there lives.

  22. LeeroyFan101 Says:

Okaayyy I’m missing out is there anyway i can get an alert when someone posts something? Oh yeah and I’m with Saint Nicholas I go to a school thats very competitive in everything so I really have to do my best at everything in sports esp and I noticed that my playing is getting better because my reflexes are getting faster by doing sports.
So yeah physical activities really help in gaming too. Oh yeah and eating healthy too cuz I noticed if all I eat is those junk foods I always feel tired and it takes longer for me to process things that i see. Its like “oh theres a dude and he’s shooting me… OH SHIT!”

  23. Attila Says:

    hehe,

yeah, I think good food also increase the focus in class. Since it doesn’t have all that sugar in it…

People that stop eating because of gaming is also not better then junk food as Chris point out. The body take this starvation status and will adapt itself to this reality and probably give some health problem later…

(Hmm there isn’t any notification system for other people then the creator of the post in wordpress… they really should make one…)

  24. Attila Says:

hmm after some thinking, you can be notify of comment. check down this page, there is a Comments (RSS). depending your browser that can allow you to see the update to comments. =)

  25. Alf2142 Says:

Im to found of food to stop eating becaus of gaming. But that is real food like fish fryed in an oven whit potatos and vegtabels, and risotto. That is really good italian food. ;)

  26. Attila Says:

hehe, there is a saying, “we are what we eat” :)

  27. LeeroyFan101 Says:

Computer is an addiction I guess and like all addictions its bad if not controlled. Like I always say “Stick to weed!”

  28. Attila Says:

I think there was some study that showed that being in front of a screen make the brain give some dopamine (or an other drug… don’t really remember). That’s why people get addicted.

  29. yoeeb Says:

i suppose you could call me an addict, im basicly on my computer from the time i get home from school until i go to bed. and ALF2142 40k ftw, i play necrons TT

  30. Attila Says:

Well I think if you actually can take a break couple of day, without feeling any need or pressure to go back at it, well that’s not so much an addiction as an habbit. ;)

  31. yoeeb Says:

    a bad 1 at that

  32. Attila Says:

    hehe i see ;)

  33. alf2142 Says:

Me to. Btw yoeeb i play the Tau, Tau rules :D

  34. ceaserthewarrior Says:

i am kind a like yoobe i play from the time i get home from school and go to bed but i like to play sport i do javeline dicus shot put running high jump
so i am fit and i still play games

  35. Attila Says:

Well stay fit is alway important

  36. ceaserthewarrior Says:

i know but i like to play the computer in the spare time

  37. falcon Says:

i think that chinese are just using games as excuse to create super soldiers for invasion of world……………………………………

    jk

I play 3 contact sport games a week, do all my homework(sometimes) and play computer. Im not an addict, and after a session of gaming i look back and realise how boring that time was, and what useful things i could have done instead. i play 2 games of rugby union on saturday, 1 after the other for different clubs, and footy (australian national sport that is unique), and still find time to do Rome. Im in extended class in school, and my teachers invite me to do out of school stuff. I think that its all a matter of self control. 3 hours a day is perfect, i dont know why you would do more. 4-5 hours i a lot, 6 is max. anything above and you are heading for disaster.

I think what saint nic said is totally true. i used to weigh 85 kilos when i was twelve, now i weigh 70, and 3 quarters of that is probably muscle( it weighs twice as much as fat). All you have to do is pull yourself together, take a look at where this is taking you and how u can try and change for the better.

No matter how bad things are they can always get better.

Freedom comes when you learn to say no.

  38. Attila Says:

    yep your right. :)

  39. ceaserthewarrior Says:

hey i got a good idea for china with addics pull the plug out of the computer then they will get a life

  40. Attila Says:

hehe, if it was that easy ;)

  41. falcon Says:

Maybe we should blow up a coupla power stations……………. we could claim to be environmentalist extremist jedis…. i put that as my religion on the census form

    hehe
