Rome Total War: The 300 and Spartans videos FAQ *updated*
Here is an attempt to answer questions commonly asked on this very popular video.
Of course since nobody reads, I guess this will be a vain attempt…
Here is the famous video.
Did you do 161 Spartans vs 4801 peasants for a challenge?
There was absolutely no challenge in winning that battle, the Spartans could have won this battle without me doing anything. If you want a challenge you should try to beat 161 Spartans with 4801 peasants. The question is why would you even think that I created this video for a challenge. It’s just a funny video of a pointless battle that people find very enjoyable to watch, with nice Music, and a funny adviser.
What is that music in the video?
The music is all from Rome Total War music.dat file. The song comes from the credits of the game which can also be found in the music.dat file. You can open that file with Audacity which will import all the music of the game.
How can I get the adviser to say what he say at the start of the battle?
I don’t know in what context the adviser says this, but it was taken from the voice.dat files, it’s more then 3 hours of audio so I don’t remember where I found those 8 sec of audio in that huge sound file but you can search it with Audacity.
Are those soldiers Spartans? Why don’t they look like my Spartans with golden shields and red clothes?!?
Yes, those soldiers are Spartans, they just have a modified skin that Creative Assembly made a long time ago. You can Download it HERE
I created a mirror on filefront HERE (since you never know if a website will survive or not…)
Why is your unit size bigger than my unit size?
Just go in your videos option, advanced, and put unit size to Huge.
Why does your interface is difference the my interface?
You need to go in your Rome Total War folder, preference folder, open preference.txt with the notepad. Search for Minimal_UI, change it to TRUE. But be warn it’s an adaptation to play in that mode and you will need to learn keyboard controls. Click F1 to see the control.
How do you rotate your unit?
Click , or .
How do you see where all your units go?
click spacebar
How did you get so close to the Spartans in the 300 video?
Right click on your Rome Total War Short Cut. in the shortcut tab had the -movie_cam to the path. Next time your will watch a “recorded” custom battle or multiplayed battle, the interface won’t be the same.

I know that for “rome total war era” version, the pack maybe doesn’t work, but can’t confirm it.
Well 1 spartan alone not that many because he would get hit far too fast to hit back. Also depend the kind of enemies.

I have also played such a battle (361spartans vs 9601) i recorded it but it was really laggy, spartans are powerfull and it isn’t hard for them to win against unarmoured peasants

I think the unit size question was the question i was ask the most, YOU HAVE NO IDEA… I would say probably arround 1000 time and that’s a conservative number.
yeah peasants are not good for much in general, really puzzle me when people tell me “hey you think you are good because of you won against peasant? blahblah”

well my guess would be that rome total war and BI don’t share the same preference, so check in the BI preference file and do the same

Well medieval II total war has better graphic, also has many improvement, I think it’s worth getting it. (but it also require a better computer). But I’m just in an over dose of it after publishing soo many video of it already. So I’m a little negative about it. But I know most player really enjoy it a lot.

well in my opinion the patch 1.5 does the job many people seem to like the expansion, but i never was a big fan of expansion overall.
As for a chronicle on spartans, I don’t think I will do that anytime soon, I’m in a total war over dose for the moment

I changed the interface as per your faq but I still get the icons of the army at the bottom and I get the map on the upper right of the screen which you don’t have. Did you change anything else?

those are normal spartans, i think i boosted them with gold experience.
I also modifie the spear on some of those video, and the mace so that they could hold ground against soo many persian.

there should be a replays folder in your RTW folder, that is if you ever saved a replay…

I did…but the files are in .rpy format those files cannot be added to idk moviemaker or whatever…so I would like to ask you how do you convert those files so you can then upload videos here on youttube for example…if you dont understand me well I ll rephrase it

well i think i personaly copied the file myself into the folder. there isn’t that many file to copy, so put them in the right folder manualy.

well the eyes doesn’t see is there is 200 or 300 or 400 soldiers on the battlefield, so 300 is a perception.

you just need to download the skin install it and run the game assuming you have the vanilla game, and when you will see spartan they will look like what you see in the video.

make sure you have the original Rome Total War and not the gold version. If on that aspect you are ok, just recruit the normal spartan it replace their skin on the battlefield

Hey Attila how do you get that command screen at the top of your screen that has like fire at will and that stuff? Also how do you get your army to face one direction quickly so you can form the V formation or something like that without having terrible difficulties?
