Play for Fun or Play to Own? My thoughts/ranting.
This is my first of many editorials, yes it’s not all that good but my writing quality to improve over time. So here it goes.
I’ve posted numorous videos with my own gameplay onto YouTube for months now and one thing I noticed was all the comments I got on “how much u suk” or “i cud own u sooooo bad!!!!!”. Most of the time I delete these. I hate these kind of comments because of the intent they seem to have, which is to hurt someone else’s feelings or damage their self-esteem. But lately I’ve been getting more of them, since I posted my RA2 videos and it’s been driving me nuts.
If you’re one those people who posted those kinds of comments on my (or anyone else’s) videos, I have a message for you:
I’m sorry I am not an awesome gamer with hardcore skills like Attila16 or any other gamer out who tries to get good at their games. I for one try to have fun with games and don’t care if I suck or not. I like just having fun and I see in doing so.
Now lets talk about what I really wanted to talk about here…
Is playing video games about trying to be great at them or just something to have fun with?
Playing a game for me is about enjoying myself. It should be like that for everyone. Playing for glory per se is not a healthy thing. It takes the fun out of playing a game and causes someone to strive for prefection. Perfection is immpossible and I see no reason to persue it. It’s okay to play a game and be very good at it but it isn’t about just being good. It’s about being happy.
I remember playing Command & Conquer Red Alert 1 a few months ago and having a good friend who did the same. That perfectly fine but he would never stop talking about how much I suck and how much he could beat me. He is an example of a sect of gamers that only seem to care about being good.

Yeah really good point, I totally agree with all you said. We should play for fun and not to be ultra good. Anyway, it’s just a game; being good at it just mean you are “virtually” good.
Some people might be good in video game but if they are jerk, just tell them they have crappy social skill.
I must also tell that even I get that kind of comment. I don’t delete them because in general I think it just make those poster look bad, so it hurt them more then me.
Of course I’m really good… but I learned many things in the 6 last month of video posting. The first thing is that when you show video of gameplay you must be humble. That’s why in my chronicles I also show my defeat and of course every time people say “Oh the mighty Attila defeated!”.
But what people are missing in my defeat is all the learning I get from them! Those defeats are great teacher and make me even stronger.
Those who say they can easily beat you are also an interesting thing. It is clear some people are “better” then you and some of them will tell you.
Most of the time they actually have no proof of it. So why not tell them to show you and tell them that this will allow you to learn from them. Most of them probably won’t ever show you anything that will prove what their claim. (and that unfortunate, because if they were really that good, we could learn…)
As a good player, I must say that when you fight someone better then you, it the best moment ever. Because you can learn from him, integrate his strategy into your strategy and ultimately beat him. You learn more from an enemy then a friend in general.
Now why do those people tell us that we suck (or something).
Well it’s a very basic instinct of comparing yourself to the other that all human have. It gives them the illusion that by telling you they are better then you, that make them better then you. So let them do that will make them happy and you can ignore. I personally like to reply that they are totally right. In general they don’t know what to reply. I also like to say I’m a veteran newbie and proud of it.
Anyway, people like that are too many we better get use to it. I don’t believe there is any on this blog so far

hehe, you said it Matt, gaming = fun and you don’t have to care about these comments, some people are better then you and me and if they like to express that in ‘you suck’ then so what. Just like in the total war games which i play on medium lv :d , I have a lot more fun then those who play it on the hardest lv because i still have a goal: to become as good as Attila :p

Well i cant relly test my skills since in the place that i live there is no original games store and the games cost more than 300 kunas.
Unfortanetly i always brag to my friend that i could beat him at nearly every game but thats not true (i just have to do that to raise my confidence)we both are of the same stuff (only difrent weapons and or races)
for Example
I win one game ,he the other and so on and so on
I usually play games if i cant play Online Multy just until they are over i played the first KOTOR till 4 in the morning just to get it over (i mostly like the stories and cutsences,thats what keeps me goin)
But when i play Counter Strike Source with my friend i tend to some times get mad but thats nothing unusual by me .
Usually i tend to Die in a hundred funny ways so thats what makes it fun for me
Games have to be fun ,but to learn that (if you are a serious person already)is to do it with a friend a friend can always make the Defeat a hell uf a lot funnyer

sweet! I love coop vids, me and my older bro play coop games all the time, anyway, that’s a good point, but now I am kind of reluctant to post videos if I ever get the software to do so, hehehe, I’m not that good, I mean yeah, I’ve had my moments, but who hasn’t anyway, I think everyone else has covered all the making you feel better about being slammed down so, I dunno what to say =\
